Read Thomas Sowell’s “Random Thoughts” column.

Here are a couple of samples.

“I can’t get excited by the question of whether Senator Robert Menendez had sex with a prostitute in Central America. It is her word against his–and when it comes to a prostitute’s word against a politician’s word, that is too close to call”.

“One of the talking points in favor of confirming Chuck Hagel as Secretary of Defense is that he was a wounded combat veteran. How does that qualify anyone to run the whole military establishment? Benedict Arnold was a wounded combat veteran!”

Now read two articles by Thomas Sowell titled “Prophets And Losses, and “Prophets And Losses II”. Dr. Sowell talks about what we have been discussing in the last few articles, (more…)

Is The President Our Boss? No. Each Individual Is His Own Boss.

INDIVIDUAL FREEDOM

The battle for individual freedom is summed up in these statements by Chris Rock. Will we allow ourselves to be ruled by an “intellectual elite” , and socialize all of the costs. Or will we allow each individual to rule himself,  with each person being responsible for his actions .  You either believe that top down decision-making by “the intelligent few” creates the best possible order for society, or you believe that each individual cooperating and competing with each other in the market, creates an order that utilizes scarce resources and knowledge more effectively.  This is what the history of the world is all about.

THE CONSTITUTION PROTECTS THE INDIVIDUAL FROM THE GOVERNMENT

The American Revolution set a different course in human history, a course that had never been tried before. It was fought for the idea that the individual was sovereign and had the right to rule himself. The constitution protected him from the concentrated power of Government run by a tyrannical “intellectual elite” from interfering in his decisions. The constitution doesn’t protect the Government from the people, it was set up to protect the individual from the Government. It is very difficult (more…)

Federal Reserve Policy Makers Have An Incestuous Intellectual Relationship With Each Other.

The Federal Reserve: The Biggest Scam In History

The Federal Reserve: The Biggest Scam In History (Photo credit: CityGypsy11)

This article, “A Bold Dissenter At The Fed, Hoping His Doubts Are Wrong”, by Binyamin Applebaum in The NY Times, is an example of , what Thomas Sowell calls, “credentialed ignorance”. He is being rather nice because I would call it an example of intellectual inbreeding. These Federal Reserve policy makers have earned their economic credentials from some of the “best” Universities, and we should stand in awe of them. Unfortunately I don’t give my respect to people with “status” that easily. I think respect is something that is earned, and just because they have a particular position or status in the political or intellectual world, doesn’t mean they should get my respect. What I have observed is that these people live in a continual feed back loop. They all think (more…)

Marine Cpl’s Letter To Sen. Feinstein About Her Proposed “Assult” Weapons Legislation.

January 9, 2013

Senator Dianne Feinstein,

I will not register my weapons should this bill be passed, as I do not believe it is the government’s right to know what I own. Nor do I think it prudent to tell you what I own so that it may be taken from me by a group of people who enjoy armed protection yet decry me having the same a crime. You ma’am have overstepped a line that is not your domain. I am a Marine Corps veteran of 8 years, and I will not have some woman who proclaims the evil of an inanimate object, yet carries one, tell me I may not have one.

I am not your subject. I am the man who keeps you free. I am not your servant. I am the person whom you serve. I am not your peasant. I am the flesh and blood of America.

I am the man who fought for my country. I am the man who learned. I am an American. You will not tell me that I must register my semi-automatic AR-15 because of the actions of some evil man.

I will not be disarmed to suit the fear that has been established by the media and your misinformation campaign against the American public.

We, the people, deserve better than you.

Respectfully Submitted,
Joshua Boston

The Government’s continual interventions into the life of individuals is reaching a point where people are starting to push back or threaten non compliance. As Government grows, its tentacles  start to reach more and more areas of our lives. As more people are affected by Government regulations, each individual reaches a point where they decide that they have had enough. It is not the last straw that breaks the camels back, it is the accumulation of all the incremental straws, combined with the last straw that breaks the camels back, this is the law of marginal utility, read more here. Each individual has a different level of tolerance before he will push back against what is pushing against him. (more…)

Spontaneous Order Utilizes More Knowledge Than Central Planning Could Ever Hope To Utilize.

December 10, 2012

This video from http://www.learnliberty.org talks about spontaneous ordering processes.

This quote by Thomas Sowell, “The abstract existence of knowledge means nothing unless it is applied at the point of decision or action“, explains why the spontaneous order of the market, efficiently produces more output than central planners can produce in a statist economy. The market economy brings abstract knowledge and decision makers together more effectively than central planning could ever hope to do.

Abstract knowledge can’t be known by one individual or board of individuals, this fact alone dooms central planning to failure. Even if planners knew all of the abstract knowledge of every individual , they wouldn’t know the exact time or place to apply this knowledge in the decision-making process. Voluntary cooperation through the free market process is (more…)

We’re All Born In The Middle Of The Story.

The Passage of Time

The Passage of Time (Photo credit: ToniVC)

Each of us was born at a specific time on a specific day of a specific month in a specific year of a specific decade in a specific era of history. Having lived for fifty plus years, I look back at the numerous days, or five decades, or the few eras of history in which I have lived, and realize that you can’t break up time into these convenient measurements and look at them separately. They do not stand on their own. As Thomas Sowell said, “results observed at a given point in time may be part of a process that stretches far back in time.”

Most people think history started the day they were born. They give little thought, or have no understanding of how the world that existed the day they were born came to exist as it did. Where each person is, and what they are doing today, is the result of decisions made by them and other people, in the recent past and the distant past. An example of this is, (more…)

Thomas Sowell’s Vision of the Anointed.

November 26, 2012

The first book I read by Thomas Sowell was, “The Vision Of The Anointed”. Nobody explains complexity more understandably than Thomas Sowell. This book helps pour a mental foundation on which to build your future thinking and understand about how to analyse everything. If I had not  stumbled upon Thomas Sowell being interviewed about this book on the radio one day, I would probably be blissfully ignorant of (more…)

Thomas Sowell’s Take On The Federal Reserve.

November 13, 2012

When asked, “if you get rid of the Federal Reserve, what do you replace it with?”. Thomas Sowell answers, “When someone removes a cancer, what do you replace it with?”

You can read more about the Fed in this short article titled “Fed Up With The Fed?” by Thomas Sowell at jewishworleview.com.

This is a quote from  the article, “It is not politically possible for either the Federal Reserve or the Obama administration to leave the economy alone and let it recover on its own. Both are under pressure to “do something.” If one thing doesn’t work, then they have to try something else. And if that doesn’t work, they have to come up with yet another gimmick.”

Thomas Sowell Used To Be A Marxist?

November 8, 2012

Thomas Sowell talks about bureaucracies having no desire to solve a problem, because the existence of the problem is more important for their survival. Finding a solution that ends the problem also ends any need for the bureaucracy. Bureaucrats and Politicians don’t turn in their pitch fork and horns for a halo and wings when they get appointed or elected. Their greed for money is exchanged for a greed for power.

Walter E. Williams Analysis of “Trickle Down Theory and Tax Cuts for the Rich”.

October 11, 2012

English: The standard Laffer Curve

Walter E. Williams talks about the fake war that has been fought against the “Trickle Down” straw man. This is a tactic used by all politicians in which they misrepresent (lie about) an opponents idea or policy, setting up a straw man, in order to argue against this false premise instead of taking on their opponent head on. In this case the left sets up the “Trickle Down” straw man to try to win the tax cuts argument.
