Obamacare Repeal Is Dead. Here Come The Bailouts, at reason.com, by Peter Suderman, at reason.com. Outside of the freedom caucus, Republicans never really wanted to get rid of Obamacare. Excerpt from the article: Even if congressional Republicans wanted to take another shot at rewriting the health law, they have little time left, thanks to Senate rules: The reconciliation instructions that would have allowed the bill to pass in the upper chamber with a simple majority expire at the end of the month.” Socialists of both parties want Obamacare.

If You Can’t Beat ‘Em ….Ban Em’, at ericpetersautos.com. If you can’t sell enough electric cars even with tax payer subsidies, what is your next move? Get bureaucrats to use government power to ban the sale of cars with internal combustion engines. Why would you mandate a more expensive way to travel and ban a less expensive way to travel? The only way for an economy to become and remain wealthy is increases in productivity. Banning more productive methode is how an economy becomes poorer.

Elon Musk Magically Extends Battery Life Of Teslas Fleeing Irma, at zerohedge.com. Excerpt from the article: “Tesla CEO Elon Musk has magically unlocked the batteries of every Tesla in Florida to maximize the distance that people fleeing from Hurricane Irma can travel before stopping to refuel at one of the company’s “superstation” charging centers….this is either a generous act of charity or an unnerving example of the control Tesla exercises over the vehicles it producers, or perhaps both.”

Trucker: ‘Overregulation’ Looks Like Deciding When I Work, Eat, And Sleep, by Matthew Garnett at thefederalist.com. An example of government central planners knowing more about trucking than the people who actually drive the rigs. Government busybodies know no bounds.

Republicans Furious After Trump’s DOJ Declines To Charge Lois Lerner, at zerohedge.com. This is why there is a breakdown of the rule of law. The rules only apply to us peons and not to our betters in the ruling elite.

FDA: To Keep Your Kid From Peanut Allergy, Introduce Peanuts Early, by Joy Pullman, at thefederalist.com. Try to protect kids from germs and allergens when they are young makes them more susceptible as they grow older. Don’t try to be smarter than the human immune system. It has a purpose. Let it work.

Hey Advertisers: The Data-Mining Emperor Has No Clothes, by Charles Hugh Smith, at oftwominds.com. Excerpt from the article: “The data-mining advertisement industry as it stands can’t identify which clicks are fraudulent or accidental, which ads actually trigger a sale, or which ads actually alienate potential customers. When a big advertiser pulls its online adverts and its sales remain unchanged, that tells everyone who’s paying attention something important: the industry isn’t doing a very good job for the billions it’s being paid.” As for me. I don’t pay any attention to any advertisements. The reliance on data and algorithms to predict outcomes can’t overcome the most important fundamental in economics; Human Action. Human action guarantees one thing; predicting is unpredictable.

ECONOMIC STUFF

3 Good Things About “Price Gouging“, Robert P. Murphy, at mises.org. Prices convey knowledge to producers and consumers about the supply of and demand for scarce resources. Resources are scarce under normal market conditions and have to be rationed some how. Prices are the most efficient and “fair” (I can’t believe I just used the dreaded four letter “F’ word) way to accomplish the rationing of these scarce resources. How much more are free-flowing prices needed when a disaster hits and resources become more scarce?

In an unrelated article: Which Do You Prefer: High Prices For Goods That Are Available vs. Low Prices For Goods That Are Not Available, by Mark J. Perry, at carpediemblog. When bureaucrats and politicians set price floors and ceilings on scarce goods, this will be your choice.

In another unrelated article from Mark J. Perry: Photo Of The Day: If Only There Were Some Market Mechanism To Discourage This Type Of Over-Buying. This photo shows why there should be no price controls. Let prices do their job. Free market prices utilize more knowledge than a whole army of bureaucrats and macro economists could ever possess.

How The Feds Blocked Effective Flood Insurance, by Dale Steinreich, at mises.org. When bureaucrats intervene in the market, knowledge about real world circumstances are distorted. Risk can’t be assessed properly and the cost of paying for the risk is usually shifted to the tax payer and away from the parties making the risky decision.

Does Government Spending Create More Economic Growth? by Frank Shostak, at mises.org. Government produces nothing. In order for Government to spend anything it must first take resources from producers in the real economy. So whatever amount government bureaucrats and politicians spend, is the same amount not spent by the people in the real economy because it was taken from them. Government spending produce no more economic growth than if the resources were used by the people who produced them in the real economy. In fact we can make the argument that economic growth is negative when government spends the confiscated resources. Why? Because resources are taken from wealth producers in the market and transferred to wealth consumers in the government.

Sears Death Spiral Accelerates: Vendors Halt Shipments As Cost Of Default Insurance Soars, at zerohedge.com. This is an example of a company not keeping up with a changing market. What is interesting is Sears started as a mail order warehouse business similar to Amazon today. As population changed from rural and cities to suburbs Sears began to open brick and mortar stores. It became the largest retailer in the US until 1989. It is amazing that Sears doesn’t remember it’s mail order roots, as internet sales is similar to what their original mail order business was. The company which started as a mail order company is about to go under because of the competition from on-line businesses. No company owns a share of the market at any time as long as others are allowed to compete. Sears would have been better off lobbying Government to make selling on the internet illegal. That is what a true crony business would do.

Tesla Is The World’s 4th Largest Automaker (Despite Only Selling 76,000 Cars In 2016) at zerohedge.com. Excerpt from the article: “Tesla is producing less than 1% as many cars as GM, but is worth more in market value.” Tesla’s value is based on expectations of future sales. The fact that Tesla is being subsidized by tax dollars creates a distortion about the reality of its future sales. This is crony capitalism at its best or worst.

Are Central Banks Nationalizing The Economy, by Daniel Lacalle, at mises.org. Excerpt from the article: “ The government is not issuing “productive money” just a promise of higher revenues from higher taxes, higher prices or confiscation of wealth in the future. Money supply growth is a loan that government borrows but we, citizens, pay. The payment comes with the destruction of purchasing power and confiscation of wealth via devaluation and inflation. The “wealth effect” of stocks and bonds rising is inexistent for the vast majority of citizens, as more than 90% of average household wealth is in deposits. In fact, massive monetization of debt is just a way of perpetuating and strengthening the crowding-out effect of the public sector over the private sector. It is a de facto nationalization. Because the central bank does not go “bankrupt,” it just transfers its financial imbalances to private banks, businesses, and families.

The Relationship Between Saving And Money, by Frank Shostak, at mises.org. This article explains the difference between real savings and money. Excerpt from the article: “Saving as such has nothing to do with money. It is the amount of final consumer goods produced in excess of present consumption……It is not money that funds economic activity but the saved pool of final consumer goods. The existence of money only facilitates the flow of the real savings.

Grab A Beer In Philadelphia, The Soda Is Too Damn Expensive, at zerohedge.com. When a soda tax makes soda more expensive than beer, we shouldn’t be surprised when more people choose to buy beer. Will the government be held liable if we start to see an increase in drunken driving accidents?

The Eclipse: How Markets Could Have Prevented The “Traffic Nightmare“, by Ryan McMaken, at mises.org. After the eclipse there were more cars trying to travel on the highways than there was room on the highways. It was a situation of overcapacity. More demand than supply. Short supply can be rationed by increasing prices or by waiting in line. Since there was no way to make people pay, long lines were the default position.

How Welfare States Make Us Less Civilized, by Per Bylund, at mises.org. In a market people have to cooperate to get what they want. The freer the market the more civilized we become. Welfare doesn’t promote cooperation. The welfare state forcibly takes goods from producers and gives a portion of the stolen goods to non producers while keeping a portion of the stolen goods for the state. The people who are having their production stolen don’t have warm fuzzy feelings for the other two groups. The people receiving the stolen money feel entitled. And the politicians feel the increase of their power.

Overall The NFL Gets A Letter Grade Of A+ For Players” Race, But an F- For Kickers And Punters, by Mark J. Perry, at carpediemblog. Sports is great because it rewards value. Why does it reward value? Because coaches are being paid to win. And winning or getting fired incentivizes coaches to keep players because of the value they consistently produce.

Mizzou Pays A Price For Appeasing The Left, at theburningplatform.com. College administrations don’t have to give in to the leftist radicals causing problems on campuses. The fact that they do tells us they either agree with the radicals, or they are surrendering because they are cowards. The only way to change the behaviour of the administration is to make them fear losing revenue more than they either fear the radicals or agree with the radicals.

Europe Is Committing Demographic Suicide, at zerohedge.com. The Muslims are playing the long game. Excerpt from the article: “Europe is committing demographic suicide, systematically depopulating itself in what British historian Niall Ferguson has called “the greatest sustained reduction in European population since the Black Death in the fourteenth century…..Europe’s Muslims appear to be dreaming of filling this vacuum……Muslim believers know very well that their fertility is such today, that they call it…the Great Replacement. They tell you in a very calm, very positive way: ‘One day all this, all this will be ours’ ….

Police Report: Crazed Kennedy Behavior That Got Them Arrested, at targetliberty.com. It’s not surprising that politically connected families think they are above the law.

Former U.S. Attorney On Awan Indictment: “There Is Something Very Strange Going On Here”, at zerohedge.com. This story is a perfect example of why the mainstream media is being called fake news. This story is not fake which is why the mainstream media is not covering it. They advance their ideology not just by deciding which stories we should know, but also deciding which stories they think we don’t need to know. This is fake news by omission.

Elizabeth Warren Calls For Democrats To Embrace Single-Payer Health Care, by Igor Bobic, at huffingtonpost.com. Single-Payer was the goal all along. Obamacare was just another step in the single payer direction. Here is what Elizabeth Warren said that has me scratching my head because it is a lie fake recollection of the facts: “President Barack Obama  tried to move us forward with healthcare coverage by using a conservative model that came from one of the conservative think tanks that had been advanced by a Republican governor in Massachusetts…..Now it’s time for the next step. And the next step is single payer,”. Mrs. Warren. Please define what you think conservative means because the Affordable Care Act wasn’t a conservative model. Conservative to me means individuals making decisions about their healthcare in a free market instead of bureaucratic decision making backed by government force.

Government Medicine: Court Declares Child Should Die Rather Than Receive Privately Funded Health Care, by Ryan McMaken, at mises.org. This is where government run health care eventually ends up. Bureaucrats will  make the decision on whether an individual will receive treatment or not. The individual has no say. And in this case the answer was no even though the medical treatment was to be funded privately instead of being paid for by public dollars. But this can’t happen in America; can it?

Gun Controllers Know Their Policies Won’t stop Murder. It’s Another Game They’re Playing, at thefederalist.com. The left is patient. They want Government to grow categorically. But they will take incremental increases. They understand how hard it is to get rid of government programs once they are implemented. Just look at Obamacare.

Climate Scares Fail To Occur, by Craig Rucker, at cfact.org. The Arctic was supposed to be ice free by now. We were supposed to have cat 4 and cat 5 hurricanes on a yearly basis. No cat 4 or 5’s  have hit America since Katrina in 06. The climate crazies are admitting that “there has indeed been a pause in the warming and that it’s models failed to predict it.” Maybe their data and their models are “fake science”.

Replacing Fossil Fuels With Renewable Energy Would Inflict Major Land, Wildlife, and Resource Damage,by Paul Driessen, at cfact.org. Environmental crazies have never read, “That Which Is Seen, And That Which Is Not Seen” by Bastiat. They don’t see the cost in land, resources, capital and labor that would be needed to meet the worlds growing energy needs. And that is not even looking at replacing less costly energy from fossil fuels with more costly renewable energy.

Wind News Update: Catastrophic Failures Jump, Maryland Gets Serious, by Lisa Linowes, at masterresource.com. You never hear about the problems with “green” energy in the main stream media. Why?

Norway’s ‘Voluntary’ Tax Plan Brings In Just $1,325, at economicpolicyjournal.com. In Norway if anyone thinks they’re paying too little in taxes, they can send more money to the government. It is shocking that people aren’t voluntarily sending in more money to fund Norways social programs.

Missouri Set To REDUCE St. Louis Minimum Wage From $10 to $7.70, at economicpolicyjournal.com. Excerpt from the article: “Missouri has discovered that the law of supply and demand applies to wages and that the higher you set minimum wage laws the more unemployment you get. In response, Missouri’s governor will allow a bill to pass that rolls back St. Louis’ minimum wage from $10 back to $7.70, the standard across the state.

Road Congestion: It’s All About Politics, by John Hinderaker, at americanexperiment.org. Minnesota’s Twin Cities traffic congestion can be blamed on bad decisions by politicians. Despite the fact that Twin City drivers time wasted in traffic has quadrupled since 1982, the Minnesota Department of Transportation will spend $700 million on bike and pedestrain infrastructure in the next 20 years and only $265 million on improvements for infrastructure for cars. Why do voters think politicians possess enough knowledge to make decisions outside their area of their expertise. Their area of expertise being getting reelected. HT carpediemblog.

How The FAA Killed Uber For Planes, by Andrea O’Sullivan, at reason.com. Once again government bureaucrats making decisions that squash market solutions that would make the economy more productive. HT carpediemblog

Why Does Michigan License Painters? by Jarett Skorup, at makinac.org. You need to have 60 hours of courses, pass an exam and pay $300 in fees to become a painter. Another example of bureaucrats using power to interfere in free decision making by individuals in the market. HT carpediemblog

Why Sound Money Does Not Need A Central Bank, Only The Rule Of Law, by Patrick Barron, at mises.ca. Our fractional reserve banking system is a skimming operation which confiscates the value of your money. Like all counterfeiting operations the first receivers of the money benefit at the expense of everyone else.

The Money Velocity Myth, by Frank Shostak, at mises.org. Great article explaining why the velocity of money has nothing to do with its purchasing power.

Get Ready For “QT1”: A First Look At The Fed’s Hidden Policy, at zerohedge.com. After nine years of QE, Quantitive Easing (pushing counterfeit money into the economy). The Fed is now starting a QT policy. Quantitive tightening (taking money out of the economy). QE stopped the housing bubble from completely bursting (correcting). Of course the housing bubble was caused by the Feds previous easy money policy. QT is what we need to cure the previous misallocation of resources. The recession brought about by the tightening policy will be blamed on Trump, not the Fed.

OTHER STUFF

Since Seattle Placed A Tax On Guns And Ammunition, The City’s Violent Crime Rate Has Increased, at zerohedge.com. When you tax something you get less of that activity. The result of having fewer guns is the increase of violent crime.

Why The First 118 Miles For Te LA to SF Bullet Train Started In Fresno (?) And Could Cost $3.6 Billion More Than Expected, at economicpolicyjournal.com. When there is a pile of tax payer money being passed out, we shouldn’t be surprised that there would be corrupt politicians doing favors for people they know.

Wind Power Sounds Good In Theory, But Rural Residents Across America Are Voting Against It When They get A Chance, by Mark J. Perry, at carpediemblog. There are real problems with wind besides the fact that tax payers subsidize the purchase of expensive electricity.

The Age Of No Privacy: The Surveillance State Shifts Into High Gear, at zerohedge.com. No matter what laws are on the books protecting our right to be secure in our persons, houses, papers, and effects from government spying. Government officials usually find ways to ignore these laws.

WE BID ‘ADIEU’ TO THE PARIS CLIMATE AGREEMENT

President Trump Announces US Withdrawal From The Paris Climate Accord, at zerohedge.com. Jerry Brown, Bill DeBlasio, Al Gore, Bernie Sanders, and Barack Obama respond to Trump pulling out of the Paris Climate Accord. If these five are for the Paris climate agreement, it must be nothing more than a socialist scheme for redistributing US tax payer money to the rest of the world. This agreement fits the world view of these gentlemen. Getting out doesn’t.

Obama Responds To Trump’s Withdrawal From Paris Climate Agreement, at zerohedge.com. First let me say this. President Obama. Since you didn’t send this treaty to the Senate for ratification, you had to know that the next President could get us out of this ‘agreement’  just as easily as you got us in to it.

Now here is what the former President said in his statement: “….the private sector already chose a low-carbon future. And for Nations that committed themselves to that future, the Paris Agreement opened the floodgates for businesses, scientists, and engineers to unleash high-tech, low-carbon investment and innovation on an unprecedented scale.”

Mr. President. The private sector didn’t choose “a low-carbon future”. Government ‘invested’ in green energy because the private sector wasn’t. The private sector doesn’t invest in technology that isn’t productive. Government ‘investment’ is nothing more than Politicians using taxpayer money to subsidize a non productive activity they think is a good idea (which means it fits their socialist world view). Once government money was available for the taking, crony capitalists, like Elon Musk and Jeffry Immelt, got in line for their share of tax payer dollars. Crony capitalist companies chose unproductive activities that were “made profitable” by tax payer dollars (Read-The Hidden High Cost Of Green Energy). So of course they’re against the US getting out of the Paris Agreement.

More from the former President: “…But even in the absence of American leadership……I’m confident that our states, cities, and businesses will step up and do even more to lead the way, and help protect for future generations the one planet we’ve got.”

First. It is OK if states, cities, and businesses want to freely choose this course of action. As long as they aren’t forced by the Federal Government or subsidized by the Federal Government.

Second. Getting out of the Paris Agreement is not the absence of American leadership. Getting out is American leadership. Leadership in America doesn’t come from political decrees. It comes from individuals coming up with new and better ways of producing output. A perfect example of American leadership is fracking. Fracking has broken the OPEC cartel because of the increased supply of oil. It has also helped lower US CO2 emissions because it has made natural gas so inexpensive that power plants are using natural gas instead of coal to produce electricity (If the purpose of the Paris Agreement was to lower carbon emissions they should be celebrating what fracking has accomplished). Here is an excerpt from an article I wrote titled; “Free Market Fracking Trumps Government Solutions When It Comes To Producing Energy.”

Market forces are more powerful than the hoped for results of central planners. The most recent example of this is the boom in oil and natural gas production, created by hydraulic fracturing [ fracking], which is taking place on private land in spite of Government policies. Our politicians shut down some Government lands to oil exploration, and made the process of getting permits for exploration on remaining lands more time-consuming [costlier]. They used their power, and our tax dollars, to promote and invest in, “green energy”. Green energy was going to create new jobs and lead our economy into the future; do you remember Van Jones the Green Jobs Tzar. As always, the plans by our best and brightest politicians, must be obedient to economic forces. Green energy has, and is, going bankrupt, in spite of being propped up by Government. Government tried to make carbon based fuels more expensive through regulation, and green energy more affordable through tax payer subsidies; And with all this Government intervention, the economic reality that green energy produces less energy at a higher cost, and carbon based fuel produces more energy at a lower cost, can’t be overcome.”

Elon Musk Leaving Trump Advisory Councils following Paris Agreement Withdrawal, at techcrunch.com. Having crony capitalist Elon Musk on a Government advisory council is like having the fox advising the farmer on how to make the hen-house more secure. (Read Here – Gov. Subsidies Helped Musk Attain $13.3 Billion Net Worth)

Studying The Climate Doesn’t Make You An Expert On Economics And Politics, by Ryan McMaken, at mises.org. Excerpt from the article: “…the Paris Climate Agreement isn’t a scientific study. It’s a political document that lays out a specific public-policy agenda…..to people who know nothing about economics or political institutions – public policy is like a magic trick. A group of politicians get together, declare that they’re going to solve problem X, and then problem X is magically solved, so long as everyone supports the “solution”…….what if the cure is worse than the disease?

Why Do Half-Measures Work For Markets, But Not for Socialism? by Ryan McMaken, at mises.org. Even as Venezuela fails as it adopts more socialist solutions, true believers say it isn’t true socialism. How The Obama Precedent Empowered Trump, by Victor Davis Hanson, at victorhanson.com. Excerpt from the article: “A supposedly disinterested media’s ecstasy over Obama’s election ensured that its subsequent revulsion at Trump could be taken no more seriously. Once a journalist declares a president a god or capable of sending shocks down one’s leg, then he would be no more credible if he were to pronounce another president the anti-Christ or capable of causing boils on one’s appendages…….A critical media is not a mere reset button that one turns on and off at one’s convenience. Instead, once it was short-circuited after 2008, its burned-out switch cannot be flipped back on in 2007. In sum, there is no longer a believable media that can offer credible critiques of the Trump presidency.”

Sock Puppets Taken To An Entirely New Level: ‘Click’ Farms Of 10,000 Phones That Give FAKE Likes, by John Lott, at johnrlott.blogspot.com. Fake likes produce fake stats about which stories are trending on social media. You now have the ability to manufacture fake outrage. Related article – Up To 15% Of Twitter Accounts Are Fake, Study Finds, at zerohedge.com.

Donald Trump’s Big Problem, He Doesn’t Understand Power, at targetliberty.com. Trump is an outsider who doesn’t understand the game played by the insiders.

Dismantle The FBI, And Give Its Money Back To The States, by Ryan McMaken, at mises.org. The FBI has turned into a big bloated money-grubbing political bureaucracy. Its goal is to make sure the FBI is declared the winner in every situation. It’s job of law enforcement can be done better and cheaper if it was decentralized. The leadership of the FBI, (not the rank and file agents), aren’t the guys wearing the white hats like they have been portrayed.

Public-Sector Unions Keep The Gravy Train Flowing To Fire Departments, by Ryan McMaken, at mises.org. Another example of “public servants” feeding at the public trough. From 1980 to 2013 fire runs have declined from 3Million to 1.24 million. In a free market, as demand for a service decreases the supply of that service shrinks also. In the public sector the opposite seems to happen. Government public servants want to protect or increase their skimming operation at the taxpayers expense. Excerpt from the article: “Don’t let these facts get in the way of the romantic view of firefighting perpetuated by popular culture. No organization loves the fantasy version of firefighting better than the public unions that lobby constantly for more lucrative salaries and benefits for firefighters.”

Wind Turbines Are Neither Clean Nor Green And They Provide Zero Global Energy, by Matt Ridley, at spectator.co.uk. Can the taxpayer subsidized experiment of green energy finally be coming to an end? All the money, resources, time, labor and capital that has been wasted on green energy, could have been used for more productive activities. Government “investment” is an oxymoron, because ‘bureaucrats’ aren’t “investing” their own money.  Wasted resources are kept to a minimum in the private sector because businesses suffer losses. But in the public sector waste continues for longer periods of time because of the seeming unlimited supply of taxpayer money.

The reality about green energy is only optional for a little while. Read these articles. Wind Power: Michigan Voters In Three Counties Reject or Restrict It, at nationalreview.com. Oklahoma Ends Wind Tax Subsidy, at instituteforenergyresearch.org. Europe Has Little Output To Show For Its Wind And Solar Investments, at instituteforenergyresearch.org.

More Solar Jobs Is A Curse, Not A Blessing, at cfact.org. More workers employed in an industry that produces higher cost energy is a bad thing. It has taken longer for economic principles to correct for these non productive uses of resources, time, labor and capital. The tax payer money that government has invested in these non productive activities has distorted the market. The inevitable correction is happening. Fortunately economic laws always win.

The Other Shoe Drops: Prime Auto Loan Losses Surge As Recoveries Tumble, at zerohedge.com. Instead of decreasing supply to match decreasing demand, the auto industry brought future demand into the present by pushing subprime loans and low payment leases. We are going to see an over-supply of used cars because the  leases have ended and also because of subprime loan defaults. There is no present demand to support the over production because demand was borrowed from the future to keep the car manufacturing plants operating in the present.

FCC Chairman Ajit Pai On Why He Is Rejecting Net Neutrality Rules, at reason.com. Free speech and access to information are important tools in pushing back against the propaganda of status quo institutions. Government bureaucracies, political parties, mainstream media, the Fed and it’s banking satellites, the health system, and our education system are just a few that need their power reduced. These institutions do not like information about their skims and scams to be found out.

Why The New York Times Is Cheering On “Censorship Algorithms”, at zerohedge.com. U.S. mainstream media  wants to use algorithms to purge the internet of stories it decides is fake news. They don’t like the fact that their monopoly on information no longer exists. Every status quo institution wants to hold on to its power. Fortunately for us the internet genie is out of the bottle.

The Pope’s Favorite Straw Man: Individualism”, by Ryan McMaken, at mises.org. It is OK for the Pope to be ignorant about economics, as long as he doesn’t pontificate about economics.

ESPN Anchor Admits Network Failing Because Of Politics, at tammybruce.com. People watch sports to escape the political BS they are bombarded with everyday.

Jimmy Kimmel Opens Up About His New Born Son’s Heart Surgery And Praises Obamacare, at npr.org. Emotion is not thinking. This is why I haven’t watched any late night shows since Johnny Carson. I don’t want to be preached to by someone who is supposed to make me laugh. We are headed toward a single payer government-run healthcare system and Kimmel obviously supports this. This direction will not be stopped by the House repeal bill. Does Kimmel understand that under his desired government-run single payer system, a bureaucrat, guided by bureaucratic rules, would have decided if his son would have had the surgery or not. It wouldn’t have been his decision. Emotional pleas do not change the reality of the cost of healthcare goods and services. Government subsidies, taxes, rules and regulations created these high cost. After the costs rise, Government then passes regulations that attempt to hide or shift the costs to someone else. Getting back to a true free market in healthcare is the only way to lower healthcare costs. What are the odds of that happening?

Obamacare Implosion: Last Major Healthcare Provider Pulls Out Of Iowa Leaving No Options In 2018, at zerohedge.com. Also: Obamacare “Death Spiral”: Maryland Insurer Seeks 50% Premium Increase for 2018, at zerohedge.com. How is our centrally planned healthcare system working out?

Maduro Hands Out Free Homes, Hikes Minimum Wages To Counter Angry Protests Wave, at zerohedge.com. Free stuff and setting prices is socialist central planning. Government intervention like this is how Venezuela got into this mess in the first place. How are these policies going to improve a situation that policies like this produced?

Philly Beverage Tax Blowback: Coca Cola Sales Plunge 32%, at zerohedge.com. Who would have thought increasing the price would lead to less being consumed. This is incremental socialism.

Dakota Access Pipeline Protest Camp Is Ecological Mess. State May Sue To Recover Losses, at kfgo.com. Do as I say not as I do. These people protested the pipeline because of possible ecological disasters. In the process, they created a real ecological disaster. We should never take these kinds of people serious.

It Takes 79 Solar Workers To Produce Same Amount Of Electric Power As One Coal Worker, by Mark J. Perry, at carpediemblog. Even thought solar and wind are subsidized by tax payer dollars, they can’t match fossil fuels in producing cheap efficient energy.

Northern Arizona U. Professors Claim Student Recordings Are Part Of An Attack, at arizonadailyindependant.com. Students are pushing back against the education establishment.

Barack Obama Officially Endorses Emmanuel Macron, at zerohedge.com. Obama says the hell with influencing elections covertly. I’m going to try to influence the French election overtly. People who think that governments don’t try to influence elections are naive. Did Russia try to influence our election? Yes. Did Obama try to influence Netanyahu’s election (read here)? Yes. Did Obama try to influence the Brexit vote (read here)? Yes. Did late night shows try to influence the election? Yes. Did the mainstream media try to influence the election? Yes. Did wall street try to influence the election? Yes. Did unions try to influence the election? Yes. Did you try to influence the election? There is a big difference between trying to influence an election and tampering with the casting and counting of votes.

Must Reads For The Week 1/21/17

January 21, 2017

The End Of The Obama World Order, at zerohedge.com. Are these years worth saving? Excerpt from the article: “The Obama years brought us the Arab Spring, Benghazi ISIS, civil war in Syria, civil war in Ukraine and the Iran nuclear deal. On the home front, we have had to deal with Obamacare, “Fast and Furious”, IRS targeting conservative groups, Solyndra, the VA scandal, NSA spying and the worst “economic recovery” since the end of World War II.” That is quite a list of accomplishments.

President Obama’s Final Message To The Press, at mediamatters.org. The President made these remarks to the press about how they should act towards the President elect: “You,re Not supposed to be sycophants, you’re supposed to be skeptics, you’re suppose to ask me though questions, you’re not supposed to be complimentary, but you’re supposed to cast a critical eye on folks who hold enormous power and make sure that we are accountable to the people who sent us here and you have done that.” Obama has a skewed sense of reality. The press was never skeptical about Obama, they were sycophants for Obama. We are about to see how the media is supposed to treat anyone who has a position of power, and that is a good thing.

Golfer-In-Chief Obama Plays More Rounds Of Golf Than Any Other President Since Eisenhower, at zerohedge.com. 306 rounds of golf in eight years. I wish he would have played 36 holes of golf everyday for 8 years.

Church Won’t Utter Trump’s Name In Prayers Since He’s ‘Literally’ A Trauma Trigger To Some People, at theblaze.com. I don’t know what is worse. Being so mentally weak that they can’t handle hearing Trumps name, or enabling these people’s mental weakness.

Anti Trump Protesters Hold ‘Cough-In’ At Trump Restaurant In NYC.

Regular people can’t relate to this. Can They?

Fake News, Fake Politics, And Fake Policy, by Robert Higgs, at blog.independent.org. Excerpt from the article: “Where government, politics, and policy implementation are concerned, we would be wise to remember that just as in the realm of often-fake news, things are rarely what they purport to be and, indeed, they are often the exact opposite.”

Report: Schools Teach Kids To Hate America Under The Guise Of “Civics“, by Joy Pullmann, at thefederalist.com. We didn’t need a report to tell us this. We’ve known this has been happening for decades.

Loretta Lynch Parting Shot At Your Individual Freedom, at lewrockwell.com. Excerpt from the article: “Attorney General Loretta Lynch secretly signed an order directing the National Security Agency…… to make available raw spying data to all other federal intelligence agencies, which then can pass it on to their counterparts in foreign countries and in the 50 states upon request. She did so, she claimed, for administrative convenience. Yet in doing this, she violated basic constitutional principles that were erected centuries ago to prevent just what she did.” This is not shocking news is it?

Chinese Province Admits It Fabricated Economic Data For Three Years, at zerohedge.com. It’s hard to believe government officials would fudge data in order to distort economic reality. This isn’t happening in the US, is it?

Free Market Economics and Crony Capitalism, by Hunter Lewis, at mises.org. Businesses love free market when they are competing for market share with larger competitors. But when they become the larger business they try to get government to pass regulations that make it harder for upstarts to compete for the market share they currently supply. Big business loves big government because it is the only thing that can keep competitors out of the market.

Must Reads For The Week 10/ 15/ 16

October 15, 2016

Obamacare’s Demise Has Arrived, at economicpolicyjournal.com. We tried to tell everyone that economic laws wouldn’t allow Obamacare to work. Now 60% of Tennessee’s Obamacare consumers will lose their coverage in 2017. Remember when Obama said: “if you like your plan you can keep your plan.” He was lying just like he was lying about those “shovel ready jobs”. Remember when he said: “it looks like those shovel ready jobs weren’t so shovel ready.”

1.4 Million Americans Who “Like Their Healthcare Plan” Set To Lose Them In 2017, at zerohedge.com. As insurance companies pull out of Obamacare exchanges, millions are going to lose their health insurance plans. Central planning provides less care at a higher price. Markets delivers the best possible care at the lowest possible price.

The Reason LA Has 10,000 Food Trucks And Chicago Only Has 70, at economicpolicyojurnal.com. The Chicago city council’s regulations has chosen the incumbent brick and mortar restaurants over the newer food truck businesses. Monopolies can only exist with government sanction. This is like the incumbant taxi cartel trying to get local governments to stop Uber from entering the market.

How Crony Contact Lens Manufacturers Are Trying To Destroy The Free Market In Contact Lenses, at economicpolicyjournal.com. Johnson and Johnson is trying to use government to restore its monopoly position in contact lens sales. Instead of using their time and effort to satisfy consumers, Johnson and Johnson is putting its resources toward lobbying government to regulate competitors out of business. Once again the consumer loses.

“Sharing Economy” Reveals That Licensing Laws Are Really About Shutting Down The Competition, by Brittany Hunter, at mises.org. The sharing economy has provided opportunities for individuals to start their own businesses. Existing businesses want to have the final say if these new competitors are allowed to enter the market. In a free market these existing businesses wouldn’t have the power to stop the competition. They would have to provide better service to keep their customers. Unfortunately we live in a hampered market economy where government has the power to force these competitors out of the market. Status quo businesses lobby government to get them to use force to keep competitors from entering the market. The status quo gains at the expense of the consumer and the upstart businesses.

When Government Fails Papa John Delivers, at economicpolicyjournal.com. An 87 year old Florida grandmother lost power last week because of Hurricane Matthew. Her family, who lived in Nebraska, couldn’t get a hold of her. They called area police and fire departments to get them to reach her to see if she was OK. When police and fire couldn’t get the job done, the grandson decided to call Papa Johns and have a pizza delivered to his grandmother. If it could be delivered, they knew she was OK. They had the delivery man call them when he arrived at her house so their grandmother could talk to them. Markets work better than government.

The Fed Who Cried Growth, by Jonathan Newman, at mises.org. The Fed can’t even predict it’s own behavior. They keep saying they will raise interest rates but for some reason they never pull the trigger. Maybe the economy isn’t in as great of shape as they are telling us it is.

Janet Yellen Tries To Explain The Elusive “Great Recovery”, at zerohedge.com. When you read, or worse yet, listen to one of these Fed central bankers talk it is mind boggling. They use words that sound like their saying something so nuanced that regular people can’t understand their brilliance, but they are actually saying nothing. And that is what they are trying to accomplish. Their monetary policies haven’t worked and they are trying to cover their asses with words.

Us Economy To Grow Just 1.4% In 2016 After Atlanta Fed Slashes Q3 GDP To 1.9%, Half Its Original Estimate, at zerohedge.com. The Fed can’t even print a solid GDP number, even though they have printed $4 plus trillion over the last 8 years. You would think that the policy makers at the Fed would have figured out that you have to first produce before you can consume. Money printing is consumption before production. All money printing does is allow the people who receive it to go out into the market and demand goods with pieces of paper. It is no different than if I counterfeited a $50 dollar bill and purchased $50 dollars worth of goods from a store. I would be stealing these goods just as if I had shoplifted the goods. The Fed is no different than a counterfeiter.

ECONOMIC LESSONS ABOUT PRICE FLOORS AND CEILINGS

NYC Mayor: Lets Bomb New York City With Rent Controls, at economicpolicyjournal.com. Rent control is a price ceiling. When the price of rent is not allowed to go above what the price would be under normal market conditions, an artificial shortage is created. Less is supplied at a lower price than a higher price, and more is demanded at the lower price than a higher price, creating a shortage of housing and a surplus of renters. It’s simple supply and demand.

Robert Reich: Economic Malpractice On The Minimum Wage, by Mark J. Perry, at carpediemblog. A minimum wage law is a price floor that a wage can’t go below. Watch the difference between the explanation about the minimum wage from Robert Reich, and the explanation by the Kahn Academy. Robert Reich is trying to fool people who are economically ignorant. When a wage is set at a rate higher than what that labor produces, the demand for that labor will decrease, creating unemployment. Less labor will be demanded at a higher rate than a lower rate, and more labor will be supplied at a higher rate than a lower rate, creating a surplus of labor or a job shortage.

Meet The Hotel Robot That Will Battle Minimum Wage Hikes, at economicpolicyjournal.com. When a wage is set higher than what the labor produces, the labor will go away. Automation is one way this will happen. Robert Reich forgot to mention this as well as some other salient points.

Free market prices coordinate supply of and demand for scarce goods and services. Government price controls, like minimum wage laws and rent control laws, are interventions that are factored into the economic law of supply and demand. Government force can’t do away with the economic reality of scarcity, it can only distort the coordination process.

MORE GOVERNMENT INTERVENTION

Ripple Labs Faces Fines From FinCEN, at payments.com. Ripple Labs is the first virtual currency exchanger to be fined by the Financial Crimes Enforcement Network. The Government wants to keep its monopoly on money creation via the Federal Reserve, by making virtual currency providers comply with anti-money laundering laws. This is curious because the US Treasury and the Federal Reserve are running the biggest money laundering operation in the history of the world.

Obamacare Killer? Global Spending On Cancer Drugs Surges To $100 Billion, at economicpolicyjournal.com. Obamacare has taken over decision-making from what was left of a free market system in the healthcare system. Coordination of supply and demand through prices barely exists. Lobbying Government for protection and favors through Government decision-making is no way to run an industry, just ask the former USSR.

The Mysterious Source Of Surging Demand For GM Cars, Revealed, at zerohedge.com. The first trick to increase sales was channel stuffing. The second was subprime car loans. Now the Government has increased its purchases from Government Motors. Maybe it does pay to get into bed with the Government! They bailed GM out. They subsidised purchases of the Chevy Volt. Now they are buying cars, (for whom, I don’t know).

Government Using Subprime Mortgages To Pump Housing Recovery, Tax Payer Will Pay Again, at zerohedge.com. This didn’t end well last time, did it?

MISCELLANEOUS

Meet Three Kids Alive Today Thanks To 3D Printing, by Ashley Welch, at cbsnews.com. We are only scratching the surface of what can be done with 3D printing.

Creative Destruction: Newspaper Ad Revenue Continues Free Fall, by Mark J. Perry, at carpediemblog. The market (decisions by individuals), picks the most productive goods and services. I predict the print media will, at some point, ask for a Government bailout.

CNN Anchor, Chris Cuomo, Ignorant About The Constitution And Hate Speech, by Robby Soave, at reason.com. And Chris Cuomo has a law degree from Fordham University? He must have missed the class when they talked about the first amendment!

Hello Al Gore: Low Sun Spot Cycle Could Mean Another ‘Little Ice Age’, by Chriss Street, at americanthinker.com. Who would have ever thought that the sun is the most important factor when it comes to the earths temperature.
