Thomas Sowell’s Random Thoughts.

July 29, 2013

Thomas Sowell gives us some Random Thoughts (read here) from wise thinkers. Here are a few examples.

“We shall not grow wiser before we learn that much that we have done was very foolish.” (F.A. Hayek)

“There is no safety for honest men, but by believing all possible evil of evil men, and by acting with promptitude, decision, and steadiness on that belief.” (Edmund Burke)

“The study of history is a powerful antidote to contemporary arrogance. It is humbling to discover how many of our glib assumptions, which seem to us novel and plausible, have been tested before, not once but many times and in innumerable guises; and discovered to be, at great human cost, wholly false.” (Paul Johnson)

As a bonus, here are some short videos of Thomas Sowell, from commonsensecapitalism.com.

Some Cartoons That Make You Think Instead Of Laugh

July 26, 2013

Once again I found these at theburningplatform.com.

134876 600 Stand Your Ground cartoons

We live in a country that is supposed to be ruled by the rule of law. The rights of the individual trump government power and mob rule. The constitution is the only thing that guards us against Government abuse, and majority abuse. We are either hanging on by a thread or as the late Joseph Sobran said, “The constitution is no threat to our current form of Government”.  Just something to think about.

THE NEXT AMERICAN REVOLUTION

This article titled The Next American Revolution by Charles Hugh Smith at oftwominds.com, is a view into the future from his crow’s nest. CHS always makes you think. Here are a few excerpts from the article.

“The next American Revolution will not be an event, it will be a process. We naturally turn to the past for templates of the future, but history has a way of remaining remarkably unpredictable.” (more…)

Declaration of Independence (article (Photo credit: Wikipedia)

JEFFERSON’S  GEM

On July 4th 1776 congress adopted the Declaration of thirteen United States of America for their Independence from the tyranny of The King. I haven’t read this document enough over the years. I’ve taken for granted that I understand the meaning of the words Jefferson penned, but my most recent reading has revealed the depth of meaning  he crammed into relatively few words. I had similar thoughts when I reread the Declaration of Independence as I did when I read The Road To Serfdom by Hayek for the first time in 1993. Those thoughts were, “Oh my God, he’s writing about today”. Before we look at some of the words in the declaration lets look at what it was like in Colonial America. (more…)

Marriage Laws Don’t Expand Rights They Limit Rights.

June 28, 2013

Marriage Day

I don’t understand why gay people want the Government to be involved in their relationship decisions. When the Government makes a law it is a one size fits all decision and it limits what you are free to do, it doesn’t expand freedom. Gays should be allowed to make a contract concerning their obligations with there partner however they both mutually agree to do so. Each, (we’ll call it a civil union), would be unique to the two people involved in the decision and wouldn’t apply to any other couple. There would conceivably be as many civil union contracts as there are civil unions. When the Government decides what the rules are, it trumps all the possible decisions couples could make in a civil union.

I have listened to both sides in this debate over the last two days since the Supreme Court decisions and quite frankly I’m disappointed in the shallow thinking on both sides of the issue. It’s like both sides have their banners planted on their particular hill of truth, and as long as their rhetoric is flying high, they won’t try to analyze the issue any deeper than their rhetoric. Russell Brand Shows Us How All Journalists Should Be Handled.

June 22, 2013

Comedian Russell Brand stops by the Morning Joe Show to promote his comedy tour. The fun really begins at the six minute mark. All journalists could be ridiculed like this if guests realized they have the advantage over the hosts by not caring what they say. Don’t just play the game by a different set of rules, play a different game.

Thomas Sowell Addresses Sexual Assult In The Military.

June 14, 2013

When it comes to analyzing any issue, it is wise to find out what Thomas Sowell has to say before you make up your mind about what you think. His explanations are always understandable, his logic is impeccable, and most importantly he is going to tell you the unvarnished truth. Here is a recent article about the sexual assaults in the military, titled Sex And The Military. He always talks about thinking past stage one when analyzing a particular situation. Sober judgement is needed in these situations not emotional hand wringing.

Here are a few quotes from the article. “For thousands of years, people around the world had common sense to realize that putting young men and young women together in military operations was asking for trouble, not only for these young people of both sexes, but for the effectiveness of military forces entrusted with the fate of nations.”

“Too much of the discussion of issues involving the role of women in the military is based on questions about whether women can do the same tasks as men with equal efficiency. The real question is whether either sex functions as well with the other sex around. If you don’t think either sex functions as well with the other sex around. If you don’t think either sex finds the other sex distracting, you are ignoring thousands of years of experience around the world.”

For a more hard-hitting article read, An Inconvenient Truth About Women In Combat, by Jack Murphy, at sofrep.org.

My only question is, if women can’t fight off a sexual assault, how are they going to fight the enemy
