Observations From The Margin

December 18, 2015

Observation Tower

-People on the left are citing the constitution for their outrage to Trump wanting to temporarily stop Muslim immigration. This is curious at best considering the left has traditionally used the constitution for toilet paper. Now they want to wrap themselves in the very document that stands in the way of everything these central planners want to do.

-The left brands certain groups of people as bigoted toward another group simply because they are not a member of that group. But isn’t the left just as guilty of bigotry against the non favored groups by simply choosing a favored group?

-Politicians place each of us into groups that can be labeled by race, sex, religion, profession etc. Since we are looked at as members of groups. I have a question? When is an activity by a few members of a group considered an outlier? And when does an increased number of people engaged in the activity cross the line and become a discernible profile of the group?

-When Romney ran for President in 2012, I heard conservatives say that we need a businessman to “run the country”. Now we have Trump leading in the polls and conservatives are saying, and he is saying, that we need a businessman who knows how to make deals. We don’t need a businessman. We need someone in the Presidency who understands how the free market works. Businessmen don’t need to know how a free market works to be successful in a free market economy. In fact businessmen like Trump donate to and lobby politicians so they can use the power of government to help their businesses and at the same time hurt their competitors. This is why Trump has donated to both parties. He is playing the political game. So when he says he’s “not a politician”, he is wrong from the standpoint of dealing with bureaucrats. But when it comes torpedoing political correctness, he is correct. This is the basis of his support. I like this part of him because it upsets the big government political class of both parties. But I wish his supporters would understand that he is not a free market guy. He is for government solutions to economic problems.

-After the recent terrorist attacks in San Bernardino the President came out and spoke about gun control before the bodies were even cold. Does he realize he is driving even more nails into the coffin of gun control. Humans have a natural instinct for self-preservation. When we see people shot dead by terrorists, who are willing to fight to their death, our natural instinct tells us we need to protect ourselves against these types of situations. Since cops can’t arrive in time to stop terrorist attacks, people are deciding to arm themselves. It’s our natural instinct for self-preservation, and Presidential pontifications about gun control are seen as either ignorant, stupid, or political.

-The Republicans pusillanimous (click here) behavior in standing up to the left, as was just demonstrated by speaker Ryan caving in on the recent budget ‘deal’, is the reason that Trump, Cruz, and Carson are the leading Republican candidates. The beltway establishment hasn’t figured out that the huddled masses don’t want another political insider in a position of power.

How Close To Your Position Is An Acceptable Distance.

May 8, 2014

Here is a video of Milton Friedman talking about Ludwig von Mises calling a group of free market economists “socialists”. I can relate to Mises stubbornness because I am also of German heritage.

MISES, HAYEK, ROTHBARD

The three most well-known economists of the Austrian school are Mises, Hayek, and Rothbard. I have read enough by these giants to know they had differnt views on how much power Government should have. Rothbard wanted very little Government, if any at all.  Hayek accepted a bigger role for Government than Rothbard. And Mises was closer to Rothbard than Hayek. All I have to say about the positions of these three men on Governments role in society is this: If they were forced to compromise their three positions and come up with how much power their system of Government should have, we would accept the compromise before we knew what it was. Why? Because it would be the freest society that has existed since our constitution was ratified, and probably more free than the original Government set up by our founders.

WHAT DID YOU KNOW AND WHEN DID YOU KNOW IT

We have to be very careful about condemning people who we feel are not close enough to our position. You were probably not close enough to your current position, at some point in your past. In 2007 I was nowhere near where I was in 2010, let alone where I am today. We have to keep people moving toward sound economics, and individual liberty. If they are already open to these ideas don’t blow them out of the water because they aren’t  where you are. Keep in mind the intellectual road you’ve traveled, and are still traveling. Look in the rear view mirror to see who is behind you traveling in the same direction on the same road, and realize there are people ahead of you looking at you in their rear view mirror.

PRESIDENT’S COMMENCEMENT SPEECH

President Obama gave the commencement address at Ohio State Universities graduation ceremony last weekend. Here are a few quotes from the speech followed by some of my comments.

Unfortunately, you’ve grown up hearing voices that incessantly warn of government as nothing more than some separate, sinister entity that’s at the root of all our problems. Some of these same voices also do their best to gum up the works. They’ll warn that tyranny always lurking just around the corner. You should reject these voices. Because what they suggest is that our brave, and creative, and unique experiment in self-rule is somehow just a sham with which we can’t be trusted.”

CONSTITUTION VS. TYRANNY

This is what you would expect to hear from someone who doesn’t want his power to be challenged. Lets look at what our founders thought about  Government and compare it to our President. (more…)

The Best Video About The Second Amendment.

April 5, 2013

This is a video of Suzanna Gretia-Hupp testifying in front of Congress about our second amendment rights. The whole video is powerful, but her last statement to Congress is the most powerful rebuke to authority I’ve ever heard. She tells them exactly why the second amendment was put into the constitution by our founders. I wish we would all stand up to authority, like she does in this video, when they go beyond their constitutionally enumerated powers.

This testimony was about the assault weapons ban legislation in 1994. She was elected to the Texas house in 1996. The Luby’s massacre happened in 1991.

Our Constitutional Republic was brought into existence for one reason and one reason only, to protect the individual from coercion and dominance by other individuals, by foreign countries, but mainly from the coercion and dominance by the very  Government the Constitution created. The constitution clearly defines the powers of Government, protects the rights of individuals, and sets up a process by which the people can give the Government more power or take power away. (more…)
