Why The Fed Has To Raise Rates, by Charles Hugh Smith, at oftwominds.com. The US dollar is the worlds reserve currency. This puts the Fed in a situation of trying to control the domestic economy and the international economy. It can’t help both at the same time. An action that helps one, hurts the other. The Fed is trying to use it’s policies to steer the economy. It doesn’t understand that economic laws are trying to correct the Feds steering.

Economics Is About Scarcity, Property, and Relationships, by Michael J. McKay, at mises.org. A free market is about  individuals making voluntary exchanges of what they own (property) in a world of scarcity.

The Department of Agriculture is a Welfare Scam, by Dan Mitchell, at freedomandprosperity.com. Crony capitalism for big Agribusinesses consists of subsidies, handouts, and favorable regulation, all on the tax payers dime. Hunger And War In WWI Germany: Remembering The Slaughter Of Pigs, by T. Hunt Tooly, at mises.org. The During WWI, the German Government fixed the prices of potatoes. This made it more profitable for the farmers to feed them to their hogs. The result was a potato shortage (which is what happens when government sets a price ceiling). The government solution to the potato shortage they created was to kill a third of the pig population. This resulted in a shortage of pork and potatoes. Central planners are much smarter than the market!

Extreme Poverty Worldwide Has Plummeted As Market Economics Has Spread, by Ryan McMaken, at mises.org. The best anti poverty plan is to keep governments from interfering in the free market. Just think how prosperous the world would be if government sanctioned central banks hadn’t printed multiple trillions of dollars over the past ten years.

How Money Disappears In A Fractional-Reserve Money System. By Frank Shostak

Tags: , , , , ,

In this article from mises.org titled How Money Disappears In A Fractional-Reserve Money System, Frank Shostak does his usual brilliant job in explaining complex concepts. He covers the difference between real savings vs. savings created out of thin air via the electronic printing press, and how Fractional-Reserve banking increases the money supply. Here are some excerpts.

“Most experts are of the view that the massive monetary pumping by the US central bank during the 2008 financial crisis saved the US and the world from another Great Depression. On this the Federal Reserve Chairman at the time Ben Bernanke is considered the man that saved the world. Bernanke in turn attributes his actions to the writings of Professor Milton Friedman who blamed the Federal Reserve for causing the Great Depression of 1930s by allowing the money supply to plunge by over 30 percent.”

“Careful analysis will however show that it is not a collapse in the money stock that sets in motion an economic slump as such, but rather the prior monetary pumping that undermines the pool of real funding that leads to an economic depression.

Improving The Economy Requires Time And Savings

“Essentially, the pool of real funding is the quantity of consumer goods available in an economy to support future production. In the simplest of terms: a lone man on an island is able to pick twenty-five apples an hour. With the aid of a picking tool, he is able to raise his output to fifty apples an hour. Making the tool, (adding a stage of production) however, takes time.”

“During the time he is busy making the tool, the man will not be able to pick any apples. In order to have the tool, therefore, the man must first have enough apples to sustain himself while he is busy making it. His pool of funding is his means of sustenance for this period—the quantity of apples he has saved for this purpose.”

“The size of this pool determines whether or not a more sophisticated means of production can be introduced. If it requires one year of work for the man to build this tool, but he has only enough apples saved to sustain him for one month, then the tool will not be built—and the man will not be able to increase his productivity.”

“The island scenario is complicated by the introduction of multiple individuals who trade with each other and use money. The essence, however, remains the same: the size of the pool of funding sets a brake on the implementation of more productive stages of production.

When Banks Create the Illusion of More Wealth

“Trouble erupts whenever the banking system makes it appear that the pool of real funding is larger than it is in reality. When a central bank expands the money stock, it does not enlarge the pool of funding. It gives rise to the consumption of goods, which is not preceded by production. It leads to less means of sustenance.

(Read this article; Real Savings = True Credit. Printed Savings = False Credit, to get more analysis from Frank Shostak concerning real vs. printed savings.)

The existence of the central bank and fractional reserve banking permits commercial banks to generate credit, which is not backed up by real funding (i.e., it is credit created out of “thin air”).”

“Once the unbacked credit is generated it creates activities that the free market would never approve. That is, these activities are consuming and not producing real wealth.

“It is those non-wealth generating activities that end up having the most difficulties in serving their debt since these activities were never generating any real wealth and were really supported or funded, so to speak, by genuine wealth generators. (Money out of “thin air” sets in motion an exchange of nothing for something — the transferring of real wealth from wealth generators to various false activities.) With the fall in money out of thin air their support is cut-off.”

“Contrary to the popular view then, a fall in the money supply (i.e., money out of “thin air”), is precisely what is needed to set in motion the build-up of real wealth and a revitalizing of the economy.”

Printing money only inflicts more damage and therefore should never be considered as a means to help the economy. Also, even if the central bank were to be successful in preventing a fall in the money supply, this would not be able to prevent an economic slump if the pool of real funding is falling.”

Thomas Sowell: Political Translations

Posted November 29, 2015 by austrianaddict
Categories: Government and Politics

Tags: , , ,

Here is a great article by Dr. Thomas Sowell titled ‘Political Translations’ (click here). In the past  Dr. Sowell has used the term “verbal sleight of hand artists” to describe politicians. In this article he gives us examples to show us how to decipher political language. Here are some excerpts from the article.

It is amazing how many different ways the same thing can be said, creating totally different impressions. For example, when President Barack Obama says that defeating ISIS is going to take a long time, how is that different from saying that he is going to do very little, very slowly? It is saying the same thing in different words.”

“Defenders of the administration’s policies may cite how many aerial sorties have been flown by American planes against ISIS. There have been thousands of these sorties, which sounds very impressive. But what is less impressive — and more indicative — is that, in most of those sorties, the planes have not fired a single shot or dropped a single bomb.”

“Why? Because the rules of engagement are so restrictive that in most circumstances there is little that the pilot is allowed to do, unless circumstances are just right, which they seldom are in any war.

“Politics produces lots of words that can mean very different things, if you stop and think about them. But politicians depend on the fact that many people don’t bother to stop and think about them.

“We often hear that various problems within the black community are “a legacy of slavery.” That phrase is in widespread use among people who believe in the kinds of welfare state programs that began to dominate government policies in the 1960s.”

“Blaming social problems today on “a legacy of slavery” is another way of saying, “Don’t blame our welfare state policies for things that got worse after those policies took over. Blame what happened in earlier centuries.”

“Nobody would accept that kind of cop-out, if it were expressed that way. But that is why it is expressed differently, as a “legacy of slavery.

“Another fashionable phrase that evades any need for evidence is “disparate impact” — a legal phrase accepted in the Supreme Court of the United States, despite being downright silly when you stop and think about it.”

“Whenever there is some standard for being hired, promoted or admitted to a college, some groups may meet that standard more so than others. One way of expressing that is to say that more of the people from group X meet the standard than do people from group Y. But politically correct people express the same thing by saying that the standard has a “disparate impact” on group Y. Once it is expressed this way, it is the standard that is suspect — and whoever set that standard has to prove a negative, namely that he is not guilty of discrimination against group Y. Often nobody can prove anything, so the accused loses — or else settles out of court.”

“Stupid? No. It takes very clever people to make something like that sound plausible. But it also requires people who don’t bother to stop and think, who enable them to get away with it.

CONCLUSION

Dr. Sowell rightly puts the blame for falling for our politicians verbal sleight of hand on ‘we the people’. He is correct. Our founders said “eternal vigilance is the price for freedom”. Over the last 50 years we have not been willing to pay this price. If we loose our freedom, the cost of getting it back will be high indeed.

Related Article -Vision Of The Anointed was the first Thomas Sowell book I read. It set a firm foundation for me on how to analyze the words of slick politicians. In this post, Thomas Sowell’s Vision of the Anointed, I link to a short video of Dr Sowell talking about “The Anointed”.

A New Social Engineering Mission Won’t Save Postal Service, by Andrew Quinlan, at freedomandprosperity.org. Even with a government sanctioned monopoly, and billions of tax payer subsidies, the U.S. Postal Service has lost money every year since 2007. The losses are in the billions. The waste of scarce resources wouldn’t have been allowed to go on this long in a free market. These resources would have been allocated to a more productive use based on consumer demand. Propping up losses hurts the economy as a whole which means it hurts all of us.

New Tax Payer Bailout To Cover Up Obamacare’s Failures, by Betsy McMaughey, at nypost.com. Insurance companies are losing money selling Obamacare policies. (This is not a shock to people who understand that Obamacare is not insurance, but a pay as you go system). I don’t feel bad for these companies because they were all for Obamacare because they thought it would provide them with 30 million new government mandated customers. They are looking to get out of the “health insurance” business, but the Obama administration is promising them tax payer funded bailouts. This is a move to a single payer (you the tax payer) system which is what Obamacare was about in the first place.

Obama’s “Clean Power Plan” Should Be Called The “Costly Power Plan“, at instituteforenergyresearch.org. New EPA regulations would only reduce CO2 emissions 1% world-wide by 2100. The cost of this is in the multiple of billions of dollars that will be paid by American electricity users. The reliable lower cost electricity that is produced by fossil fuels will be replaced by unreliable higher cost electricity produced by “green energy”. We are chasing infinitesimal decreasing amounts of a gas that is not a pollutant (CO2), at an ever-increasing cost. It doesn’t make sense unless you’re President Obama.

Cuomo Orders Censorship Of ‘Man In The High Castle’ Ads, by Mollie Hemingway, at thefederalist.com. “The Man In The High Castle” is a new show about what 1960’s America would look like if the U.S. had lost the second world war. Ads for the show depicting Nazi imagery were taken off of NYC subway system by Governor Cuomo. Money quote from the article, “Fascism is so bad that the ruling authority needs to decide what commercial speech is acceptable in public spaces? The governor ordering the ads pulled is exactly the kind of government control the show warns about.

“Carbon Charge”: Yale Plans To Institute Global Warming Fee, by Rebecca Downs, at redalertpolitics.com. I thought this might be from the Onion.  Can anyone say increasing student loan debt. There is nothing like paying interest on a global warming tax over a 15 to 20 year period.

Hillary Clinton, Donald Trump Slam Pfizer Moving To Ireland For Lower Taxes, by James O’Shea, at irishcentral.com. The high cost of doing business in America because of taxes and regulations incentivizes companies to move to more business friendly places. To stop this kind of activity, Hillary and Trump want to pass more regulations. Even though it is the original regulations that forced these companies to leave in the first place. Why don’t they want to get rid of the regulations that created the incentives in the first place.

Eliminating Cash Makes It Easier Silence Critics, by Ryan McMaken, at mises.org. Every transaction can be monitored in a cashless society. Thanksgiving Proclamations

George Washington made the first Proclamation of Thanksgiving in 1789 (read here). But Thanksgiving wasn’t made an official holiday until Abraham Lincoln proclaimed it in 1863 during the middle of the Civil War. Here is Lincoln’s proclamation.

Washington, D.C.
October 3, 1863

By the President of the United States of America.

A Proclamation.

The year that is drawing towards its close, has been filled with the blessings of fruitful fields and healthful skies. To these bounties, which are so constantly enjoyed that we are prone to forget the source from which they come, others have been added, which are of so extraordinary a nature, that they cannot fail to penetrate and soften even the heart which is habitually insensible to the ever watchful providence of Almighty God. In the midst of a civil war of unequalled magnitude and severity, which has sometimes seemed to foreign States to invite and to provoke their aggression, peace has been preserved with all nations, order has been maintained, the laws have been respected and obeyed, and harmony has prevailed everywhere except in the theatre of military conflict; while that theatre has been greatly contracted by the advancing armies and navies of the Union. Needful diversions of wealth and of strength from the fields of peaceful industry to the national defence, have not arrested the plough, the shuttle or the ship; the axe has enlarged the borders of our settlements, and the mines, as well of iron and coal as of the precious metals, have yielded even more abundantly than heretofore. Population has steadily increased, notwithstanding the waste that has been made in the camp, the siege and the battle-field; and the country, rejoicing in the consciousness of augmented strength and vigor, is permitted to expect continuance of years with large increase of freedom. No human counsel hath devised nor hath any mortal hand worked out these great things. They are the gracious gifts of the Most High God, who, while dealing with us in anger for our sins, hath nevertheless remembered mercy. It has seemed to me fit and proper that they should be solemnly, reverently and gratefully acknowledged as with one heart and one voice by the whole American People. I do therefore invite my fellow citizens in every part of the United States, and also those who are at sea and those who are sojourning in foreign lands, to set apart and observe the last Thursday of November next, as a day of Thanksgiving and Praise to our beneficent Father who dwelleth in the Heavens. And I recommend to them that while offering up the ascriptions justly due to Him for such singular deliverances and blessings, they do also, with humble penitence for our national perverseness and disobedience, commend to His tender care all those who have become widows, orphans, mourners or sufferers in the lamentable civil strife in which we are unavoidably engaged, and fervently implore the interposition of the Almighty Hand to heal the wounds of the nation and to restore it as soon as may be consistent with the Divine purposes to the full enjoyment of peace, harmony, tranquillity and Union.

BE THANKFUL

Even though it seems we are in conflict about everything. Each of us should be thankful that we live in a country that protects our right to complain. We should be thankful our founding principles have led to the creation of a standard of living that other countries could only dream of.

We take our individual freedom and our countries wealth for granted, even though they are rare indeed when compared to other countries throughout the history of the world. Be Thankful!

Last Years Thanksgiving PostThe Real Thanksgiving Story. Excerpt from article.

“In the harvest feasts of 1621 and 1622, “all had their hungry bellies filled,” but only briefly. The prevailing condition during those years was not the abundance the official story claims, it was famine and death. The first “Thanksgiving” was not so much a celebration as it was the last meal of condemned men.”

“To rectify this situation, in 1623 Bradford abolished socialism. He gave each household a parcel of land and told them they could keep what they produced, or trade it away as they saw fit. In other words, he replaced socialism with a free market, and that was the end of the famines.”

“Thus, the real meaning of Thanksgiving, deleted from the official story, is: Socialism does not work; the one and only source of abundance is free markets, and we thank God we live in a country where we can have them.”

Cuba has had a centrally planned communist economy ever since Castro took over in 1959. The videos below show a few things. 1) Look at how poor these people are. 2) Black markets will spring up even under a communist dictatorship. 3) People will always try to find ways around intrusive laws. 4) Black markets are more productive than centrally planned systems. 5) The totalitarian State Needs to control information if it is to survive.

Krugman: Terrorism Will Be Good For The French Economy, at economicpolicyjurnal.com. You can’t make this stuff up. Here is a quote from the maestro: “[I once] facetiously suggest[ed] that we fake a threat from space aliens, to provide a politically acceptable cover for stimulus. Now France has been attacked, unfortunately by real terrorists instead of fake aliens, and Hollande is declaring that security must take precedence over austerity. Is this the start of something big? OK, obligatory disclaimer that will do no good in the face of the stupidity. I am NOT saying that terrorism is a good thing……..We’re just trying to think through some side effects of the atrocity.

The money used for Government spending to fight terrorism (aka stimulus) has to come from some where. The money is just transferred from the private sector to the public sector. Which means actual resources are moved out of the productive private economy and into the unproductive Government economy. This is just a version of the Broken Window Fallacy. Here is an article I wrote in September of 2013 which explains the Keynesian stimulus dream, A Keynesians Dream, Cruise Strikes In Syria.

Roubini Says Paris Attacks Could Boost Eurozone Economy, at economicpolicyjournal.com. The number of doctors is decreasing because of retirement, and the doctors who go to work for the hospitals aren’t as productive as they were when they worked for themselves. Observation Tower

-Did the Democrats schedule their recent debate on a Saturday evening so no one would watch it?

-I never thought I’d see the day when an avowed socialist would run for the Democratic presidential nomination. Their candidates have always tried keep that hidden.

-Does anyone other than the President believe that global warming is the biggest threat to the world?

-Here is my solution to the “illegal immigration” problem. 1) Enforce the existing laws pertaining to immigration and the border. 2) As illegal immigrants come in contact with our government systems ( legal system, welfare system, and educational systems), deport them. 3) Make it less costly and time-consuming to become a legal immigrant to the U.S. If you change the incentives, you will change behavior.

-After the attacks in Paris, I thought President Obama would suggest that the French pass stricter gun laws. You never let a serious crisis go to waste.

-A lesson from the attacks in Paris: The first responders are the people involved in the incident. The police and firemen are the second responders. So each of us should be aware of our surroundings, and be prepared to take the proper action (fight or flight) if a situation arises. And everyone who has a concealed carry permit, should carry.

-The unrest on college campuses over the last few weeks is an example of colleges reaping what they have sown. Political correctness,  multiculturalism, and diversity have produced ignorant unrealistic kids.

-I drove my truck to the auto repair shop last week without any brakes because a brake line ruptured. I found out the only reason you can go fast is because of brakes?
