Guess Where The Country’s Highest Incomes Are? at economicpolicyjournal.com. These politicians and bureaucrats have the highest incomes and yet produce nothing of value in exchange for their income. We are forced to pay them for interfering with our productive activities, which makes it harder for our activities to remain productive.

Marriage Laws Don’t Expand Rights They Limit Rights.

June 28, 2013

Marriage Day

I don’t understand why gay people want the Government to be involved in their relationship decisions. When the Government makes a law it is a one size fits all decision and it limits what you are free to do, it doesn’t expand freedom. Gays should be allowed to make a contract concerning their obligations with there partner however they both mutually agree to do so. Each, (we’ll call it a civil union), would be unique to the two people involved in the decision and wouldn’t apply to any other couple. There would conceivably be as many civil union contracts as there are civil unions. When the Government decides what the rules are, it trumps all the possible decisions couples could make in a civil union.

I have listened to both sides in this debate over the last two days since the Supreme Court decisions and quite frankly I’m disappointed in the shallow thinking on both sides of the issue. It’s like both sides have their banners planted on their particular hill of truth, and as long as their rhetoric is flying high, they won’t try to analyze the issue any deeper than their rhetoric. The Great Walter E. Williams : The State Against Liberty

June 26, 2013

This is a great video of an excerpt from a speech Dr. Williams gave in March 23, 1991. It was over twenty years ago and sounds like it was given yesterday. The reason for this is that the battle in society has been and always will  be the same. It is summed up in the quote by F. A. Hayek at the top of this web site, which reads, “The coordination of man’s activities through central planning or through voluntary cooperation are roads going in very different directions, the first to serfdom and poverty, the second to freedom and plenty”. Dr Williams gives a great defense of liberty.

Here are a couple of excerpts from the video.

“Large amounts of liberty is the rare occurrence in history, and oppression in varying degrees is the norm….even in the United States, as Thomas Jefferson predicted, he said that “the natural progress of things is for Government to gain ground and for liberty to yield. “

“The average American is inattentive, apathetic, or sometimes or most often a party to the assault on liberties by the state.”

Observations From The Margin.

The administration that thinks it’s a good idea to give Syrian rebels weapons in their fight against a better armed Assad Government, is the same administration that thinks it’s a bad idea for law-abiding citizens to possess or carry a weapon in order to defend themselves  against armed criminals.

Many wring their hands about violating the rights of  “illegal aliens” because law enforcement  is “targeting” them, but it doesn’t bother these people when the IRS violates the first, fourth, and fifth amendment rights of legal citizens on a daily basis.

On Russia Today television Former KGB agent turned Russian President Vladimir Putin disagreed with President Obama’s statement “that you can’t have 100% security and 100% privacy”, saying,  it is possible if done within the law. (Isn’t this bass ackwards. Aren’t we the country that was founded on the rule of law.)

Because the Assad regime has crossed the Presidents “red line” on the use of chemical weapons, the White House is now going to arm the Syrian Rebels. Will arming the rebels take care of the chemical weapons problem?

Individuals from China and Russia used to seek asylum in the U.S. when they ran afoul of their tyrannical Government. Now an individual from the U.S., Edward Snowden, is seeking asylum in China or Russia because he ran afoul of our tyrannical Government. Someone please wake me up!

The Affordable Care Act was 2500 pages. The immigration bill is pushing 1000 pages. These pages are great places for politicians to hide benefits for some groups, and costs for other groups, simply because it is impossible to read and decipher that much information in a timely fashion. This is similar to document dumping by lawyers.

Kathleen Sebelius won’t intervene for the ten-year old girl who was wanting to get on the adult list for a lung transplant. The age requirement is twelve years old to be on the adult list. Two points before a final point. 1) Sebelius is applying the rule of law in this case, even though she ignores the rule of law when it doesn’t work in her favor. 2) A judge intervened and the ten-year old received the transplant, but what about the unseen person who is now further down the donor list and may die because the ten-year old got placed higher up the list. Final point) This is just a glimpse of what the Affordable Care Act is going to look like, medical decisions are going to be taken out of the hands of the patients and the doctors, and placed in the hand of a bureaucrat. You better not be on the wrong side of a “bureaucrat extraordinaire” like Lois Lerner (IRS) if she’s the one making decisions on your health care.

Russell Brand Shows Us How All Journalists Should Be Handled.

June 22, 2013

Comedian Russell Brand stops by the Morning Joe Show to promote his comedy tour. The fun really begins at the six minute mark. All journalists could be ridiculed like this if guests realized they have the advantage over the hosts by not caring what they say. Don’t just play the game by a different set of rules, play a different game.

The Tollkeepers On The Road To Serfdom, by D. W. MacKenzie

The Road to Serfdom, by Hayek.(Photo credit: UniversidadFrancisco Marroquin)

In this article by D.W. MacKenzie titled,The Tollkeepers On The Road To Serfdom, at mises.org, he explains that when bureaucracies grow, “democracies could not be relied upon to hold it in check”. He calls the IRS the toll keepers on the road to serfdom, and we are  the tollpayers on this same road. This is an outstanding article and a must read. Here are some excerpts from it.

“Elected Federal officials can be voted out of office. But the entrenched army of empowered, unelected Federal bureaucrats remains to wield its power, and the Internal Revenue Service bureaucrats are some of the worst.”

“Politicians see the IRS and its tax code as a means of fixing perceived political problems…. Yet, regardless of the legislative agenda, it is largely unelected bureaucrats who decide where tax money goes.

“The potential for bureaucratic abuse is pervasive. The worst rise to the top of bureaucracies in part because the people who want power most are, as Hayek put it, single-minded idealists. Single-minded idealists are intolerant, by definition, believing that their plans for society are objectively superior to any competing plans. Those who have a comparative advantage at acquiring and wielding power are the most ruthless and insensitive people in society.”

“Hayek pointed out that people complete the path from citizenship to servitude only after a psychological (or sociological) change occurs. Today’s change is from a free people believing in the primacy of individuals to make their own choices to dependence and acceptance of government as the entitled class.”

“Once people accept bureaucrats as authorities, as persons who should direct the actions of others, and reject dissenting views as illegitimate or illegal, they have taken up the mantle of serf.”

“Obama most likely did not directly order Lois Lerner or Holly Paz to “punish enemies” in the Tea Party movement, but Tea Party members were singled out. Since Tea Party groups oppose the current Federal tax/spending system, the single-minded idealists at the IRS thought these targeting actions to be justifiable.”

I have said that the President is just the face of the problem. The expansion of Government power is the problem. The bureaucracy has an inertia of its own, no matter who is elected. Bureaucrats are self-interested individuals like the rest of us, which is why they will try to use their power to undermine any person, or group of people, who talk like they want to cut the size of Government. Politicians and bureaucrats both want power, the difference is politicians can at least get voted out if they abuse their power. A bureaucrat is immune from losing his position, and may even get a promotion for abusing his power.

The NSA Data Mining = Future Crime Unit

June 20, 2013

Here is a great video I found on libertypenblog.blogspot.com. Jim Harper explains why the NSA storing your data is unconstitutional.

In the video he says, “We are at a fascinating historical juncture because it’s been 230 plus years since we saw a general warrant….it’s something the 4th amendment was passed to eliminate, it’s something the Revolutionary War was fought over because King George issued general warrants, allowing his troops to rummage through the houses of the colonists. Now we have a general warrant issued by a secret court, that allows the NSA to rummage, ultimately, the data that reflects communications of all Americas…..The Government has given itself power vis-a-vis individuals, while denying that they had collected information in violation of the constitution.

Here is what the fourth amendment states, “…no warrants shall issue, but upon probable cause, supported by oath or affirmation, and particularly describing the place to be searched, and the persons or things to be seized.

He talks about the disconnect between how the NSA has interpreted what congress passed, and how Congress understands what they’ve passed.

Senator Harry Reid has said this is nothing new, we’ve known about this for seven years.

May I remind the Senator from Nevada the oath he took when he was sworn into office.”I do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic; that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the same; that I take this obligation freely, without any mental reservation or purpose of evasion; and that I will well and faithfully discharge the duties of the office on which I am about to enter: So help me God.”

The duty of his office is to defend the Constitution of the United States, against foreign and domestic enemies. If he knew about this for seven years and did nothing, wouldn’t he be considered a domestic enemy of the Constitution? Shouldn’t this be considered treason? Edward Snowden (read here), is being accused of treason by Senators and Congressmen, for shining light on the fact that Government bureaucrats are violating our Constitutional rights. Treason is in the eye of the beholder.

Liberty Pen has had some great articles this week concerning freedom in general, and the NSA in particular. Here are the articles I liked.

GOVERNMENT IS TOO BIG

Have we finally reached the point that we can all agree that Government is too big? The latest scandals, concerning Government overreach, should be driving this point home for everyone to see no matter how politically partisan a person may be. But the republicans and the democrats have done a great job of making this a game between two teams, each having a loyal following who will defend their favorite team no matter what the members of the team do. As long as the banner of their favorite team is flying high they let corruption, power grabs, and abuses of individuals rights slide.  The normal solution for any corruption or illegality in Government is to put a new angel in the position that was previously occupied by a fallen angel [aka devil]. This will not cure the problem, it will only temporarily take care of the symptom, but the underlying problem is still there. The underlying problem is (more…)
