Are You a Democrat, a Republican, or a Libertarian?

It’s difficult to discuss issues calmly and logically because all of us plant our ideological flag on one of these three hills [ D,R, or L, or liberal, conservative, or libertarian]. If we see the other person’s flag, we automatically place them under that banner, and think there is no chance to reach common ground on any issue. The fact that each group has painted themselves into an ideological corner, because they demand a degree of  ideological purity, is what makes it easier to place the other person under a particular banner. AFFORDABLE ENERGY?

Market forces are more powerful than the hoped for results of central planners. The most recent example of this is the boom in oil and natural gas production, created by hydraulic fracturing [ fracking],which is taking place on private land in spite of Government policies. Our politicians shut down some Government lands to oil exploration, and made the process of getting permits for exploration on remaining lands more time-consuming [costlier]. They used their power, and our tax dollars, to promote and invest in, “green energy”. Green energy was going to create new jobs and lead (more…)

The Best Video About The Second Amendment.

April 5, 2013

This is a video of Suzanna Gretia-Hupp testifying in front of Congress about our second amendment rights. The whole video is powerful, but her last statement to Congress is the most powerful rebuke to authority I’ve ever heard. She tells them exactly why the second amendment was put into the constitution by our founders. I wish we would all stand up to authority, like she does in this video, when they go beyond their constitutionally enumerated powers.

This testimony was about the assault weapons ban legislation in 1994. She was elected to the Texas house in 1996. The Luby’s massacre happened in 1991.

Thomas Sowell Explains How Democracy And Freedom Are Not The Same Thing.

April 4, 2013

Here is a great article by Thomas Sowell titled, Middle East ‘Democracy‘, at jewishworldreview.com, in which he explains the difference between democracy and freedom. Here is a quote form the article.

“The Obama administration treated the creation of “democracy” in the Middle East as a Good Thing. Ironically, those who created the United States of America viewed democracy with fear-and created a Constitutional republic instead.

Here is how Thomas Sowell defines the rule of law, freedom, and democracy. (more…)

Marriage, Why Is It Protected By The Law?

Marriage Day

Marriage Day (Photo credit: Fikra)

I wrote a post titled, “We’re All Born In The Middle Of The Story“, in which I quote Thomas Sowell who said, “results observed at a given point in time may be part of a process that stretches far back in time.” This quote is the first thing everyone should think about when they are trying to understand any particular issue that is being discussed. Most people think history started the day they were born. They give little thought, or have no understanding of how the world that existed the day they were born came to exist as it did. Being born in the middle of the story automatically makes us ignorant, sometimes blissfully ignorant, about the beginning of the story. When it comes to the issue of marriage vs. gay marriage, we are all born in the middle of the story.

The issue of gay marriage is not a question of understanding why gays don’t  have the “right to marry”, it is an issue of understanding why marriage, defined as a union between one man and one woman, was legally acknowledged in the first place. This issue doesn’t seem that complicated if you look at it logically and not emotionally, but that’s the problem in today’s society, emotions and feelings trump logic and reason in our therapeutic world.

MARRIAGE PREDATES GOVERNMENT

Marriage existed as a private institution before Governments acknowledged it as a legally protected public institution. Just because (more…)

Senator Ted Cruz Stirs Up A Hornets Nest.

Respect is something that is earned, not given just because of someone’s status. Sen. Cruz is starting to earn my respect because, as you will see in the video, he doesn’t worry about the consequences of challenging  senior members of the Senate who think they are his betters. How dare this freshman Senator talk to these senior Senators like this, doesn’t he know his place? I love the fact that he seems not to care what happens when he hits the hornet’s nest with a seven iron.

Sen. Cruz asks some important questions about the constitution which is that pesky little document that gets in the way of what central planners want to do. The best part of this is toward the end when Sen. Feinstein says, “…sir, congress is in the business of making law, the Supreme Court interprets the law….”. Her comment shows exactly why are country is in the chaotic (more…)

On The Gun Issue: Can We Survive The Arrogance And Ignorance Of People In Power?

These are just a few recent examples of…….., well I really don’t know what to call it. Make up your own mind, after you read some of these stories.

Cupcakes decorated with army men confiscated from boy,9, by school.

Boy,7, suspended from school after eating his pastry into shape of a gun.

Fifth grade girl suspended for having piece of paper resembling a gun.

Teacher threatens police action after boy shows picture of new air soft bb gun.

Biden, “no need for an “assault weapon”, get a shotgun”.

Colorado rep, Salazar tells women to use a whistle instead of a gun for protection.

Some of these are examples of people with an irrational fear of guns, who don’t understand that other people don’t share this irrational fear. (more…)

Follow Up To Student Debt Post. Government Creates The Problem, It Isn’t The Solution.

Higher education -- Remember young man, your f...

Higher education — Remember young man, your first step in the REAL WORLD is just 8 feet ahead. Best of luck !!! …item 2..Men and women both have different ways to get from A to B (2 May 2012) .. (Photo credit: marsmet471)

In a previous post, “Young People Get Hooked Into Huge Debt When They Take The Student Loan Bait”, we talked about how high school graduates are becoming debt serfs thanks to the Government. Lets analyse a couple of articles that talk about the rate of illiteracy for N.Y.C. high school graduates, and see if the evidence leads us to the same perpetrator, Government.

The first article’s headline is,” Shocker: 80% of NYC Graduates Unable To Read“. This headline is misleading. What is really being said is that 80% , or 10,700, of NYC high school graduates who take a test to get into community colleges failed to meet basic skills they should have learned in high school. But don’t worry, (more…)

Thomas Sowell, Human Capital More Important Than Physical Capital.

March 11, 2013

Thomas Sowell discusses the effect of foreign aid on human capital in the countries receiving it in this interview with William F. Buckley on his show Firing Line. It is from his book “The Economics And Politics Of Race”, written in 1983, (a book I highly recommend). If foreign aid affects human capital in the countries who receive it, how much does our bloated welfare system, and Government regulations affect the human capital of our own country today?

Quotes from the video about foreign aid, “..you are simply transferring the wealth that has already been created, but you are not transferring the ability to create that wealth……too often in foreign aid you are rewarding people for doing all the wrong things….you are subsidising irresponsibility.

Physical capital is the tools, machines, and infrastructure used to produce goods and services, which in turn increases the wealth of a country. Human capital is the knowledge and skills needed to maintain and increase this physical capital stock. (more…)

Senators Ted Cruz and Rand Paul Fighting For Liberty.

March 7, 2013

Watch Senator Ted Cruz question Attorney General Holder about using drones against Americans on U.S. soil, during a Senate Judiciary Committee hearing, in the video below.

Read about and watch clips of  Senator Rand Paul as he filibuster’s the nomination of John Brennan for CIA director. Senator Paul is concerned about the same thing that Senator Cruz was questioning AG Holder about in the above video. (more…)
