Why We’re Losing Liberty, by Prager University

September 10, 2015

This is a video from Prager University about the original purpose of the constitution and what it has morphed into. Just remember as the power of the State grows the liberty of the individual shrinks.

Alexander Hamilton and James Madison had concerns when other founders wanted to add the Bill of Rights to the constitution. Hamilton stated his concerns in Federalist 84. He thought that individual rights could be limited if they were listed. He asked how could congress infringe on a particular right if the constitution gives congress no power to do so?

To compromise with other founders like Thomas Jefferson, they had the ninth and tenth amendments added to the Bill of Rights. These amendments just restated Hamilton’s position when it came to the enumerated powers of the newly created government.

9th.- The enumeration in the constitution of certain rights shall not be construed to deny or disparage others retained by the people.

Put differently: The listing of certain rights in the constitution, does not mean that the people’s rights are limited to those listed. The people’s rights are many and unprescribed.

10th.- The powers not delegated to the United States by the Constitution, nor prohibited by it to the States, are reserved to the States respectively, or to the people.

Put differently: The United States can only claim the powers listed in the constitution, all powers not listed are reserved for the several states or the people. The United States powers are few and defined.

HOW DID WE GET HERE?

Looking at it with 20/20 hindsight I guess you could say both sides were correct to fear government power in the hands of imperfect human beings. That is why our founders put a governor on the Corvette, so whoever got in the drivers set couldn’t go over the speed limit.

Even with all of their warnings, look at how big government has gotten. We have no one to blame but ourselves. Eternal vigilance is the price of freedom, and we’ve been asleep for a long time. Reigning in government now will have a high cost. Are we willing to pay that price?

Human Capital Episode 3: Planned Parenthood Trafficking In Baby Parts

August 20, 2015

Here is another video from the Center For Medical Progress. An ex-procurement technician form Stem Express LLC talks about her experiences while working in Planned Parenthood clinics. If PPH isn’t breaking the law related to trafficking in fetal/baby organs than what are they doing? How is this any different from what Abortion Doctor Kermit Gosnell was convicted of murder for doing? You have to watch this video.

HUMAN CAPITAL: EPISODE 3

MEDIA COVERAGE OR LACK THERE OF

Why isn’t the media covering this story? We’re told that journalists can put their personal biases aside and cover a story right down the middle. But, if they don’t cover a particular story, we won’t be able to discern the truth about the assumptions concerning their biases. Or are their biases revealed by the stories they don’t report?

Physicist Werner Heisenberg said, “…separation of the observer from the phenomenon to be observed is no longer possible.” In other words, how you think determines what you see. When your thinking produces an incorrect perception about reality, it doesn’t change the underlying reality, it only masks it in your mind. At some point you have to change your thinking to fit reality, or you have to mask reality to fit your thinking.

If the stories the main stream media choose not to report shows their bias, can you trust they are not being biased on the stories they choose to report?

George Will Outlines What Should Be In Every Commencement Speech

June 11, 2015

In this video from Prager University, George Will covers truths that most commencement speakers would never consider uttering.

Here are some excerpts from the video.

“….Your tuition has been much too costly, for which you can blame the Federal Government and the avarice of the University. Washington has produced a bubble in higher education just like it produced a bubble in housing. Some Government planners decided that too few people owned homes. So the planners decided to force an increase in home ownership. They lowered lending standards for people seeking a mortgage. This produced a glut of sub-prime loans and sub-prime borrowers, and then a crash.”

“Next some Government genius decided that there were too few college students. So Government made student loans and other tuition subsidies easier to get. Of course colleges and universities responded by increasing tuition to capture these Government subsidies. Which is why the cost of college has been rising four times faster than the rate of inflation…..There is now over a trillion dollars of student loan debt….Most of you are graduating today with debt. In effect you are graduation with a mortgage but no house. And what did you get for all this expense? A sub-prime education.”

This video is really good watch the whole thing.

On Earth Day, Let’s Celebrate The Benefits Of Fossil Fuels!

April 22, 2015

Alex Epstein gives us a different perspective on fossil fuels in this video from Prager University.

The video below is Alex Epstein wading through the People’s Climate March in NYC last September.

When you watch the video you literally see how you are swimming against the current of public opinion when you don’t agree with their environmental ignorance.

In this article by Alex Epstein titled, Making The World A Better Place By Using More Fossil Fuels, he says, “Without exception, anyone who lives a modern life is directly or indirectly is using large amounts of fossil fuel energy – it is that ubiquitous.

Most people don’t understand that 87% of the energy they use comes from fossil fuels. They also don’t understand that plastics, ink, dyes, resins, tires, tar, lubricants, cloths, lipstick, and much more (see list here), are made from oil.

People who don’t like the use of fossil fuels probably haven’t really thought about a world without fossil fuels, because they Were Born In The Middle Of The Story.

I couldn’t let this go. Does President Obama understand that this doesn’t look “presidential”? Who and where are his political advisers who understand and stage the optics of every action? Does he or does he not listen to them? What do you think was going on in the minds of the two Marines who were saluting their commander and chief? I know what I was thinking.

What Creates Wealth? Freedom

September 10, 2014

Front Cover

George Gilder talks about what creates wealth in this short video below from Prager University. He talks about knowledge and innovation leading to economic growth. But the most important point he makes in this video is that freedom is the foundation on which knowledge and innovation is expanded and used productively to create economic growth. Here are some excerpts from the video.

“If freedom promotes knowledge and innovation, which leads to economic growth; why don’t all people and Governments embrace it? Innovation is a surprise, it’s unpredictable. This unpredictability makes many people uncomfortable. Their goal is to eliminate surprise. One finds this in all utopian vision, from communism, to socialism, ….in Europe with its failing welfare states and more and more in the US. We see their desire to eliminate surprise in the ever-expanding role played by Government, bigger bureaucracies, more rules, and more regulations. Every new crisis, real or imagined, brings ever more laws….Ironically the ones that benefit from all these regulations are big corporations and their teams of lawyers, lobbyists, and accountants. They’re the only ones who have the resources to untangle the mess and survive it. This drift away from freedom can be reversed, and quickly within a matte of a few years….Because it’s an economy of mind, the future can change as fast as minds can change. The opportunity for dynamic growth exists not only in the US, but all over the world if we’re only courageous enough and free enough to seize it.”

WHAT CREATES WEALTH?

Here are some related quotes by George Gilder from his books  Wealth and Poverty and Knowledge and Power.

“Socialist and totalitarian Governments are doomed to support the past, because creativity is unpredictable, it is also uncontrollable. If the politicians want to have central planning and command, they cannot have dynamism and life. A managed economy is almost by definition a barren one. “

“Knowledge is about the past; Entrepreneurship is about the future regulations are rules based on past experience. Regulators are political appointees responsive to their bosses and to the rules. Only entrepreneurial owners taken their cues from the subtle signals on the crests of creation.”

“Under capitalism, economic power flows not to the intellectual, who manipulates ideas and basks in their light, but to men who gives himself to his ideas and tests them with his own wealth and work.”

“The real issue is between the rule of law and the rule of leveler egalitarianism, between creative excellence and covetous “fairness”, between admiration of achievement versus envy and resentment of it.”

“The leading enemy and obstacle for accomplishment throughout the ages is the philosophy of victimization and socialist redistribution.”

In my opinion Wealth and Poverty is a must read, not only because it will expand your mind, but also because his writing style will be pleasing to your ear buds.

Capitalism vs. Crony Capitalism

April 23, 2014

Many people who decry capitalism do so from a position of ignorance of what capitalism really is. They look at the market system that exists in the U.S. today and mistakenly call it capitalism. Our present economic system is not free market capitalism, it is crony capitalism. Crony capitalism is a branch on the same central planning tree that includes socialism and fascism. In a true free market capitalist system, businesses wouldn’t be able to lobby government to pass laws that protect their position in the market and raise the costs on their present and future competitors, because government wouldn’t have the power to make these rules. Under free market capitalism businesses are incentivized to first serve their fellow-man before they can profit in any way. They must produce a good or service that consumers will freely exchange a portion of their labor for. Under crony capitalism businesses are incentivized to protect their own self-interest at the expense of the consumers and tax payers who are usually the same people.

Here is a video titled,  Why Capitalism Works, from Prager University, featuring George Gilder. He talks about the role of the entrepreneur in free market capitalism, as well as the incentive of giving before you receive.

SCARCITY TRUMPS  UTOPIAN VISIONS

The problem with how people perceive an economy is they don’t understand that a utopian world can’t be created on earth. The first rule of economics, scarcity, combined with the imperfections of man, make a utopian world impossible. The real question should be: What economic system can use limited means to supply the most ends for the most people? Put another way: In a world of scarce means and unlimited ends, which economic system can satisfy the most desires, with the knowledge that many desires will remain unmet? Free market capitalism,  produces the best possible result. History shows the branches of the central planning tree, whether it’s called crony capitalism, socialism, fascism, progressivism, communism, et al, produce a system were people have a lower standard of living and less individual freedom. A free market is nothing more than individuals freely producing, consuming and exchanging what they want, and in whatever quantities they want. Any interference by government, no matter how small, in the freedom of the individual to produce, consume, and exchange, moves an economic system down the central planning road, which is what Hayek called, “the road to serfdom”.
