Central Planners Don’t See The Consequences Of Their Actions. Or Do They?

INTERVENTION PRODUCES CONSEQUENCES

When central planners intervene in the economy, they either think their interventions, A) will help, B) know they won’t help but want to look like they’re “doing something”, or C) know what the result of the interventions actually will be and lie about these results to the public. This means they are either, A)  ignorant, B) politically self-interested, C) evil, or D) all of above. Here are some recent examples of intervention that have or will lead to consequences that are either known or unknown by the implementors of these plans. You decide if they are born out of ignorance, political self-interest, or evil. The central planning devil or angel should not be judged by their intentions, they should be judged by the consequences of their actions. The difficulty comes in sifting through all the propaganda, or spin, as they like to call it, and find the actual results of their actions. Understanding economic principles helps pull out the nugget of truth. (more…)

Thomas Sowell Tells Us What Syria Is All About

September 5, 2013

As only he can, Thomas Sowell sifts out the B.S. and finds the golden nugget regarding Syria. Hard to believe it’s political. The article titled Serious About Syria?, is just another gem that we come to expect every time he puts a pen to paper. It seems that our President is a grand master checkers player, unfortunately he is playing foreign policy chess. Here are some excerpts from the article. (more…)

The Ruling Aristocracy Does Not Abide By The Rules They Impose On The Serfs.

August 12, 2013

The rule of law is defined by Thomas Sowell (read here) as, rules known in advance, applied generally, and constraining the rulers as well as the ruled. He defines freedom as, exemptions from the power of the rulers and a corresponding limitation on the scope of all laws, even those of democratically elected Governments. With the recent  Obamacare waiver for congress and their staffs, the incremental erosion of the rule of law continues unabated. You barely hear a whimper from the pusillanimous (yes, it means what you think it means),Republicans. The freedom of the individual that is protected by the constitution, the same constitution these Republican swore to defend and protect from all enemies foreign and domestic, takes second place to what they value most, which is (more…)

Too Big To Fail GM vs. Too Small To Save Hostess

FREE MARKET CAPITALISM OR CRONY CAPITALISM

I noticed Hostess products are back on the shelves again in grocery stores. It leaves me scratching my head about how this could possibly have happened because I thought they went bankrupt. I remember when GM was going to go bankrupt we were told that GM needed to be bailed out to save the company and all the jobs, because we couldn’t see an America without GM. The politicians and the media were banging this drum as loudly as they could, leaving the impression that if Government (using yours and my money) didn’t step in to help, GM would go under and cease to exist. When Hostess declared bankruptcy, the politicians and the  media weren’t beating the same drums, in fact the drums were silent. I guess if GM was “too big to fail”, and Hostess was “too small to save”! Apparently the only thing that saved GM from going extinct, was the rigged crony capitalist bankruptcy set up (more…)

Bitcoin = The Unstoppable Ingenuity Of Individuals

Bitcoin Accepted Here [by freeborn]

Bitcoin Accepted Here [by freeborn] (Photo credit: Adam Crowe)

We have talked about the Bitcoin phenomenon a couple of times here. I have said in this post, Let’s Take A Look At Bit Coin, “The reason I like the discussion about bitcoin: it is an opportunity to get people to think about what money is, how it evolved through the barter system, what is a gold standard, what is paper money, why the Federal Reserve’s monopoly on printing money is a bad thing, and could bitcoin (or some other not yet thought of idea) evolve into the medium of exchange not controlled by Government?” I would like to add that another reason I like bitcoin is because it represents the spirit of 1776. It’s the unstoppable dynamism that occurs when individuals use their inventiveness, curiosity, and thirst for freedom to get around Government planners plans. The free market is an unstoppable force (more…)

SELF IMPOSED BORDERS

I read an article in the LA Times titled, “British Choice Of Churchill On 5-Pound Note Leaves Women Out”, by Henry Chu, in which women are upset that Winston Churchill’s image will replace Elizabath Frys on the five-pound note starting in 2016. They’re saying “It’s another instance of women’s contributions being wiped out”. Because we have accepted the political model that each of us belongs to a different group; whether it’s men or women, white or black, rich or poor, old or young, gay or straight, union or non-union, democrat or republican, etc, etc, etc, we think of every politically contrived situation as an us versus them zero sum battle. These self-imposed borders become an imaginary ideological prison that we can’t reason our way out of. This prison prevents us from understanding that the true battle is between each person individually, vs. the only entity that can take individual liberty away, Government. This entity of Government exists only (more…)

Thomas Sowell Weighs In On The Zimmerman Case

July 18, 2013

When Thomas Sowell weighs on an issue there is usually not much more that can be said. In this article titled, Is This Still America? (read here), he is concerned about how this mess is going to affect the rule of law, peoples faith in the legal system and their faith in the country. Thomas Sowell  has said in the past that, “People have to be aware of the dangers in letting economic decisions be made through political processes”. I think we can change a couple of words, and the meaning will still hold true. Let’s try this,  People have to be aware of the dangers in letting legal decisions be made through political process.

Politics is poison, it pits groups against each other. Our constitution was set up to insure the rights of the individual against the coercive power of groups in general and Government power in particular. Our Constitution has nothing to say about group rights.  I hate politics because, logic and reason are tossed aside because it  gets in the way of the emotional orgy that is at the heart of politics. Everyone wants to have their way, which is impossible, except in the utopian world of political promises.

Quote from the article, “The only real heroes in this trial were the jurors. They showed that this is still America — at least for now — despite politicians who try to cheapen or corrupt the law, as if this were some banana republic. Some are already calling for a federal indictment of George Zimmerman, after he has been acquitted.”

“Will this still be America then?”

The Great Walter E. Williams : The State Against Liberty

June 26, 2013

This is a great video of an excerpt from a speech Dr. Williams gave in March 23, 1991. It was over twenty years ago and sounds like it was given yesterday. The reason for this is that the battle in society has been and always will  be the same. It is summed up in the quote by F. A. Hayek at the top of this web site, which reads, “The coordination of man’s activities through central planning or through voluntary cooperation are roads going in very different directions, the first to serfdom and poverty, the second to freedom and plenty”. Dr Williams gives a great defense of liberty.

Here are a couple of excerpts from the video.

“Large amounts of liberty is the rare occurrence in history, and oppression in varying degrees is the norm….even in the United States, as Thomas Jefferson predicted, he said that “the natural progress of things is for Government to gain ground and for liberty to yield. “

“The average American is inattentive, apathetic, or sometimes or most often a party to the assault on liberties by the state.”

The Tollkeepers On The Road To Serfdom, by D. W. MacKenzie

The Road to Serfdom, by Hayek.(Photo credit: UniversidadFrancisco Marroquin)

In this article by D.W. MacKenzie titled,The Tollkeepers On The Road To Serfdom, at mises.org, he explains that when bureaucracies grow, “democracies could not be relied upon to hold it in check”. He calls the IRS the toll keepers on the road to serfdom, and we are  the tollpayers on this same road. This is an outstanding article and a must read. Here are some excerpts from it.

“Elected Federal officials can be voted out of office. But the entrenched army of empowered, unelected Federal bureaucrats remains to wield its power, and the Internal Revenue Service bureaucrats are some of the worst.”

“Politicians see the IRS and its tax code as a means of fixing perceived political problems…. Yet, regardless of the legislative agenda, it is largely unelected bureaucrats who decide where tax money goes.

“The potential for bureaucratic abuse is pervasive. The worst rise to the top of bureaucracies in part because the people who want power most are, as Hayek put it, single-minded idealists. Single-minded idealists are intolerant, by definition, believing that their plans for society are objectively superior to any competing plans. Those who have a comparative advantage at acquiring and wielding power are the most ruthless and insensitive people in society.”

“Hayek pointed out that people complete the path from citizenship to servitude only after a psychological (or sociological) change occurs. Today’s change is from a free people believing in the primacy of individuals to make their own choices to dependence and acceptance of government as the entitled class.”

“Once people accept bureaucrats as authorities, as persons who should direct the actions of others, and reject dissenting views as illegitimate or illegal, they have taken up the mantle of serf.”

“Obama most likely did not directly order Lois Lerner or Holly Paz to “punish enemies” in the Tea Party movement, but Tea Party members were singled out. Since Tea Party groups oppose the current Federal tax/spending system, the single-minded idealists at the IRS thought these targeting actions to be justifiable.”

I have said that the President is just the face of the problem. The expansion of Government power is the problem. The bureaucracy has an inertia of its own, no matter who is elected. Bureaucrats are self-interested individuals like the rest of us, which is why they will try to use their power to undermine any person, or group of people, who talk like they want to cut the size of Government. Politicians and bureaucrats both want power, the difference is politicians can at least get voted out if they abuse their power. A bureaucrat is immune from losing his position, and may even get a promotion for abusing his power.

The NSA Data Mining = Future Crime Unit

June 20, 2013

Here is a great video I found on libertypenblog.blogspot.com. Jim Harper explains why the NSA storing your data is unconstitutional.

In the video he says, “We are at a fascinating historical juncture because it’s been 230 plus years since we saw a general warrant….it’s something the 4th amendment was passed to eliminate, it’s something the Revolutionary War was fought over because King George issued general warrants, allowing his troops to rummage through the houses of the colonists. Now we have a general warrant issued by a secret court, that allows the NSA to rummage, ultimately, the data that reflects communications of all Americas…..The Government has given itself power vis-a-vis individuals, while denying that they had collected information in violation of the constitution.

Here is what the fourth amendment states, “…no warrants shall issue, but upon probable cause, supported by oath or affirmation, and particularly describing the place to be searched, and the persons or things to be seized.

He talks about the disconnect between how the NSA has interpreted what congress passed, and how Congress understands what they’ve passed.

Senator Harry Reid has said this is nothing new, we’ve known about this for seven years.

May I remind the Senator from Nevada the oath he took when he was sworn into office.”I do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic; that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the same; that I take this obligation freely, without any mental reservation or purpose of evasion; and that I will well and faithfully discharge the duties of the office on which I am about to enter: So help me God.”

The duty of his office is to defend the Constitution of the United States, against foreign and domestic enemies. If he knew about this for seven years and did nothing, wouldn’t he be considered a domestic enemy of the Constitution? Shouldn’t this be considered treason? Edward Snowden (read here), is being accused of treason by Senators and Congressmen, for shining light on the fact that Government bureaucrats are violating our Constitutional rights. Treason is in the eye of the beholder.

Liberty Pen has had some great articles this week concerning freedom in general, and the NSA in particular. Here are the articles I liked.
