Obama Translated, at zerogedge.com. You need your political speak to english dictionary to understand what politicians say.

The Biggest Threat To Minimum Wage Restaurant Workers Everywhere?, at zerohedge.com. When the minimum wage is set above the value produced by the worker, businesses will find a lower cost substitute for the labor.

The Mirical Cure…? zerogedge.com. You can’t counterfeit your way to prosperity.

This Is How The President Plans To Un-Cancel Insurance Policies, at economicpolicyjournal.com. Unintended consequences happen when central planners try to plan what is still a qusi free market activity. It’s the same concept as trying to raise the minimum wage law above the market price.

The Economics Of Obamacare, by Robert P. Murphy, at mises.org. The laws of economics are always in play no matter what plans Governments make.

Top Sectors That Throw Money At Congress, economicplicyjournal.com. They all pay both sides of the aisle, it is called hedging their bets. When the difference is 65% or above, you have a good idea what that which party the better thinks will deliver the goods.

U.S. Oil Production At Highest Level Since January of 1989, by Mark J. Perry, at aei-ideas.org. Free markets work in spite of government plans to make drilling for oil more difficult.

Progressive Government Fails, by Daniel Henninger, at online.wsj.com. Quote from the article, “The essence of modern Democratic progressivism is: “You will participate in what we have created for you, and you will comply with the law’s demands.”

Does Washington Know Best? by Walter E. Williams, at jewishworldreveiw.com. The amount of knowledge needed to centrally plan an economic activity is impossible for Government to know. No one individual or bureau of individuals knows this knowledge in a free market. Prices convey and coordinate this knowledge. When Government messes with prices through regulation, taxes, and subsidies, well just look at the Obamacare mess. It will get worse as they try to fix it through more “planning”.

– We shouldn’t get so fixated on the “glitch” with the Obama care website, that we lose focus on the real problem, which is the obamacare regulations. It’s as if someone tells you he is going to inject you with a syringe full of poison, and you object because the syringe is broken or the needle is dirty or dull.

– If a Government populated by the “best and brightest, with access to unlimited funds, didn’t have enough knowledge or tax dollars to set up a website in three years, how could it possibly have enough knowledge, dollars, and time to set up a one size fits all healthcare system for 300 million constantly changing individuals.

– Intellectuals in the media are worried that the Presidents misrepresentation of the truth, (aka lie), will lead to a loss of Governments credibility with the people. I’m trying to figure out how being suspicious toward people in positions of power is a bad thing.

– Watching the President try to spin his way out of the, “…if you like your plan you can keep your plan…” lie, makes me yearn for the days of President Clinton, “…it all depends of what the meaning if the word is, is”. When it comes to spinning and lying, the President is a rank amateur compared to Clinton who was the Babe Ruth of spinning and lying.

– The administrations mouth pieces say you can replace your “crummy” plan with a plan that meets the new standards of Obamacare. I have two questions: 1) After you become and an adult and your parents don’t make decisions for you anymore, who decides what’s “crummy” or not? You or a politician. If both of you are looking after his own self interest, who would you trust with a decision concerning you? At least your parents loved you.  2) Who pays for the increased cost of the higher standard  plan? Either the tax payer, the healthcare provider through lower compensation, or you through higher deductibles and premiums, not “benevolent” Government.

– If a dope like me knew that Obamacare would force individuals to give up their plans, how could the smartest President to ever hold the office not know it?

The Reality Of Obamacare

October 28, 2013

“SOCIALISM BY INSTALLMENTS”

Ludwig von Mises said, “The middle-of-the-road policy is not an economic system that can last. It is a method for the realization of socialism by installments.” The middle ground between free markets and socialism is chaotic, with the only stable ground being free markets, on the one end, and socialism on the other. The free market being stability in wealth, and the latter being stability in poverty. Our current and impending healthcare debacle is an example of what Mises is saying in the quote.

We haven’t had anything close to a free market healthcare system since government put a freeze on wages during WWII. The unintended consequence of this action was employers started giving health insurance as a benefit, in order to attract labor for employment, because they couldn’t pay higher wages. Up to this point individuals payed for their health insurance out of the wages they earned. The individual was insuring himself against financial ruin in case their was a catastrophic situation with his health. He paid for all other health care problems out of his earnings. Over the years the unintended consequences of  increased Government regulations has moved our healthcare system into the chaotic middle ground we are experiencing.   Obamacare has and will make our health care system more chaotic. It was designed as the next step toward a single payer health care system. Single payer is simply the Government controlling all decisions about the production and consumption of healthcare (aka socialism).

THE ECONOMICS OF HEALTHCARE AND HEALTH INSURANCE

Understanding health care becomes easier when you know a few things about it. 1) Health care is a good of service produced and exchanged in the free market, and is therefore not a free good. 2) Health insurance is a good or service produced and exchanged in the free market, and therefore not a free good. 3) Health insurance is not health care. Health insurance is just one of many arrangements, an individual can make to pay for healthcare. Health care is the good that health insurance pays for. 4) Even if someone thinks having health insurance or health care is a right, it doesn’t change the fact that both are economic goods, that have to be produced before they can be exchanged and consumed.

Scarcity is what dictates if something is an economic good. If a particular thing is available naturally, like the air we breath, it isn’t scarce and therefore doesn’t have to be produced before it is consumed. Scarce goods have to be rationed because the demand for the good is greater than our ability to produce it. Prices ration scarce goods in a free market. The price of a good is the result of every individual making decisions on what they produce, exchange and consume. Each decision every individual makes, even if it has nothing to do with a particular good, has an effect on the production and consumption of that particular good. The reason it has an effect is because the scarce means of production have alternative uses. For example a barrel of oil doesn’t just produce gasoline, oil is used to produce dyes, rubber, resins, adhesives, asphalt, solvents, lubricants, nylon, polyester, acrylic, pharmaceuticals, and plastics. The means (resources, labor, time, capital) used to produce healthcare can be used for other purposes. If the compensation for their use in healthcare doesn’t cover the cost of production, they will be employed in uses that are more profitable. This scarce good (healthcare) will be made scarcer still. In our new socialized healthcare system, Government will have to ration healthcare because the artificially set prices will be meaningless for the purpose of rationing.

IT GETS WORSE

The health care website “glitch” isn’t even a cup of water in the ocean of problems that awaits us as this ever-expanding law begins implementation. The Government health insurance exchange is not health insurance. The exchange is playing the role of a broker trying to help individuals find “affordable” health insurance  from participating insurance companies. What happens when the 2500 plus pages of regulations gets unleashed on what’s left of the market system? 1)  Businesses have started to protect themselves against the future cost of the law in a number of ways: Keeping their number of employees under 50. Larger companies are cutting employers hours to under thirty per week. They’re getting rid of employer paid health care plans altogether because it’s cheaper to pay the fine (tax) instead of paying the insurance premiums. They’re making their employees pay more toward their insurance. 2) Insurance companies have been protecting their bottom line by increasing premiums in anticipation of higher costs. Some insurance companies have decided not to supply health insurance because it won’t continue to be a viable business model down the road. 3) Healthcare providers from doctors to medical device manufacturers have started to change how they do business because they know they will not be compensated enough to cover the cost of producing their good or service.

CONCLUSION

The cost of our “new” healthcare system is already going up. We changed the whole system because there were supposedly 30 million Americans without health insurance, although these uninsured people could go to the emergency room to receive healthcare. The prices charged by hospitals and the prices charged by insurance companies are what cover the cost of treating these uninsured people, just like the cost of shoplifting is factored into the prices you pay at a store. This old way of paying for the uninsured is less expensive than the cost of insuring them under Obamacare.

Obamacare incentivizes an increase in the demand for a scarce good, and a decrease in the supply of this same good. The scarce good becomes more scarce as supply and demand move in opposite directions. Government decisions will have to ration healthcare, but as the years pass the ultimate rationing mechanism for our socialized healthcare system will be waiting in line and death. Fortunately for us we have a culture of freedom. We will figure out a way around the government obstacles that have been placed in the way of us getting what we want, even if it’s an illegal black market for healthcare. Freedom is in the DNA passed on by our founding fathers, and I think we’re in the process of rediscovering it.

Observations From The Margin

Observation  (Photo credit: mooglet)

-The shooting at the Washington Navy Yard begs the question. Besides MP’s, why aren’t military personnel, who are trained in the use of firearms, allowed to carry weapons on military installation? Did we not learn anything from the Fort Hood shootings? The only individuals armed at the Navy Yard and Fort Hood, other than the MP’s, were the two killers. Had other military personnel broken the law and carried a firearm, like the killers did, fewer people would have died.  “If it saves just one life, isn’t it worth it” to change this rule. This policy was apparently set in stone during the George H W Bush administration in 1992, read here,

-The IRS is the Government agency tasked to administer Obamacare. The National Treasury Employees Union, which represents IRS workers, wants an exemption from Obamacare for its members. Congressmen and their staffs passed Obamacare into law, now they have an exemption from Obamacare. The law is supposed to apply to everyone equally. Apparently some people are more equal than others.

-The President said that raising the debt ceiling won’t increase the debt. The simple fact that the Federal budget has yearly increases already built-in, and interest payments have to be paid on 1 trillion dollars of new debt incurred every year, proves he is either ignorant or a liar.

-If the Government takes $2.4 trillion in taxes from producers, and spends $3.7 trillion annually, that means that approximately 33 cents (actually it’s more), out of every dollar spent by Government is borrowed, whether it’s money spent to pay the president’s salary, or used to purchase paper clips. How many years would it take for you to go bankrupt if you borrowed 33cents out of every dollar you spent? How long would it take if you were allowed to counterfeit money?

-When the President compared the glitches in the health care exchange website to Apple having minor problems with iOS 7 mobile operating system, he forgot the most important difference between the two, which is Apple can’t force you to purchase their product while the Government is forcing you to purchase health care insurance. That simple difference produces incentives which changes how the supplier of the good or service deals with the consumer.

-The Government “shut down” is nothing more than a political game to see who can win the blame game. Any area of Government that can be shut down for the political benefit of the administration will be shut down at the expense of the public (the WWII memorial is an example). And any sob story created by the shut down will be trotted out in front of a compliant media for the political benefit of big Government politicians.

-If we involuntarily fund the Federal Government through taxes, how can the Government be more important than the private sector? The private sector produces what Government redistributes or consumes, and the Government produces nothing that the private sector wants or couldn’t produce more efficiently.

-I bet you tip waiters even if they provided lousy service, but you would never write a check to the Federal Government for one penny more than what your tax preparer said you owed in taxes.

-The Senate has not passed a budget to fund the Federal Government in five years, even though the House of Representatives has sent a budget to them every year. The Senate democrats actions tell us that they think they can gain more politically by having a yearly fight over passing a continuing resolution, than what they could gain by passing a budget.

-“Economist” Nancy Pelosi has stated in the past that, “…unemployment insurance is one of the biggest stimuluses to out economy….it is a job creator...” (watch video here). If that’s the case, we should have a permanent Government shutdown, layoff all Government employees,  give them unemployment compensation and sit back and let the stimulative effect of unemployment insurance create enough jobs to employ these furloughed workers.

Some Humor To Take The Edge Off

September 11, 2013

I saw these  at theburningplatform.com.

Obamacare is the means to the single payer end. It must be defunded, because once it’s implementation starts in earnest, it will be impossible to get rid of. What was the last Government program that was allowed to die on the vine? Politicians won’t even revamp the post office, even though it is loosing billions a year, so they won’t have the stones to repeal Obamacare.

Everything that we are witnessing concerning Syria, are means to the end of the President trying to get out of the political corner he painted himself into.

There IS a “time sensitivity” to a strike against Syria. Delay gives them time to hide what they don’t want destroyed, and delayed punishment’s effect is degraded with each passing day.

It’s not just about passing the buck, it’s about having someone out on the limb with him.

On the one hand we are threatening to use force against the Assad Regime who, as the President said, is no threat to the U.S. And on the other hand, using this force would be helping Al-Qaida, the organization that was responsible for 9/11 and is still an enemy today.

Observations From The Margin

September 2, 2013
Observation Tower

Observation  (Photo credit: mooglet)

– Why is the administration so worried about civilians being killed in Syria, when it wasn’t worried about the civilians being killed in Afghanistan, Pakistan, and Yemen by our drone strikes? Would the President have been ok with Assad if he had killed the same amount of civilians with drone strikes?

– The President is going to congress to seek authorization for the use of force in Syria for three reasons that I can see. 1) If congress doesn’t give him authorization, he can use it as a reason not to go in. It would essentially be his get out of jail free card from the “crossing the red line” jail of his own making. 2) If congress passes a resolution of force, “he” is no longer out on a limb by himself, if “we” attack and it doesn’t workout. 3) The length of time it will take to get this authorization (congress is back in session Sept. 9th), will put this issue so far in the rear view mirror, it will be “old news”. All of these give the president plenty of political cover, and that’s the most important thing to a politician.

– Thomas Sowell uses a term, “thinking beyond stage one”, Frederic Bastiat uses, “that which is seen, and that which is not seen”, when talking about the unintended consequences of a particular action. When it comes foreign policy, I don’t think the administration sees the long-term consequences of their stage one thinking.

– Why would you put off the implementation of something as wonderful as Obamacare, unless its implementation wouldn’t be so wonderful for you politically.

– Do the fast food workers who went on strike for higher wages from their employers realize they are angry at the wrong group of people. They shouldn’t be angry at their employers, they should be angry at consumers for not being willing to pay a higher price. The consumer ultimately pays the worker’s salary, and has no obligation to consume the same amount at the higher price. Remember when the cost of anything goes up, there will be less of that activity, and labor is no exception.

– I think the President should appoint a member of The Lavender Hill Mob, as the next Federal Reserve Chairman.

– When people get upset that congress is taking another recess, or the President is taking another vacation or playing another round of golf, instead of working; I always tell them we would be better off, and it would be less expensive, if we paid them double and sent them on a paid vacation for the duration of their terms. They couldn’t intervene into our lives, and we would be just fine.

– Minority children are usually helped the most by school voucher programs. The Justice Department is trying to block the Louisiana school voucher program, on the grounds that some of these students are in districts that remain under desegregation orders, and these vouchers would impede the desegregation process. Real children’s futures sacrificed to an imaginary God.

– I don’t understand all the hand wringing about concussions in football. I figured out concussions were probably a bad thing when I was playing 8th grade football. I tried to tackle, or I couldn’t get out of the way of, a guy who out weighed me by 50 pounds. I saw the flash of light when we collided, or when he ran over me, and I knew that wasn’t good. Every one knows the risks of playing football, and each person weighs these risks against the benefits and either keeps playing or quits playing.
