I remember when I was in High School I thought that socialism (taking from people who I thought had a lot of money and “giving” it to those who don’t have much) was a good idea. Once I started working I realized how ignorant I was. I feel sorry for the student in this video because she doesn’t even realize how ignorant she sounds. Unfortunately the democrat presidential candidates are saying the same thing. They are just better at hiding the message with verbal slight of hand.

The high price shares bought back with debt would now have a lower price. If they have to sell shares to raise revenue, they would be selling at a huge loss.

Student Debt: Game Of Loans. By Prager University

Ronald Reagan said, “The nine most terrifying words in the English language are, “I’m from the Government and I’m here to help“. No words are truer when you consider student loan debt. What is portrayed as benevolent Government providing student loans to make college affordable, is a scam. The cost of college has risen because of all the money the government has provided. Government is stimulating the demand for college through easy to get college loans. And as we all know prices go up when too much money is chasing too few goods. The reality is these students become debt serfs to the government for years after they graduate.

Political Correctness, A Civil Society, And The Rule Of Law

In my previous post we talked about how political correctness produces petulant people. Here is an example of what we talked about. In this video a person from the media is taking pictures of the protests at the University of Missouri. The students, and what appear to be adults, don’t like him being there. The interaction between the reporter and the people in the crowd is instructive in understanding the mentality of the crowd. I see two different kinds of people in the crowd. Some are acting like children, and others are acting like union guys on a picket line trying to intimidate a scab laborer.

It’s impossible to reason with ignorant children because there is no starting point on which to agree. And the only way to deal with bullies is to stand up to their intimidation. Unfortunately you can’t educate ignorance if the ignorant don’t want to be educated, and standing up to bullies can ultimately lead to a physical confrontation.

The reporter in the video shows us how difficult it is to educate ignorance and stand up to bullies. I tip my hat to his courage. Here is what he says to an ignorant lady who won’t listen, “Ma’am , ok ma’am, the first amendment, ma’am, ma’am, Don’t yell at me ma’am. The first amendment protects your right to be here, and mine.” Of course she didn’t hear him or wouldn’t listen to what he said.

Then the union like bullies try to intimidate him, and when he doesn’t back down they push a little harder.

Make sure you watch the last 20 seconds of the video to see how an “adult” acts when a different reporter tells her he doesn’t have to move. She says, “You need to get out, you need to get out, you need to get out, you need to get out.” Doesn’t that sound like a child repeating I want my mommy, I want my mommy, I want my mommy. Then she yells to the crowd, “Hey, who wants to help me get this reporter out of here. I need some muscle over here.” She showed she was childish and a bully.

CIVILIZED SOCIETY AND THE RULE OF LAW.

A civilized society can only function when there are behavioral standards that are accepted by a majority of its members. These standards are not top down rules from government, like the PC crowd wants to impose on people. These behavioral standards (how we treat each others), are passed down from previous generations. These societal norms evolved spontaneously over time because acting a certain way produced more cooperation and less conflict.

The break down of the rule of law is causing what we are seeing happen from Baltimore to the University of Missouri. If the rule of law is defined as “general rules, known in advance, and applying to the rulers as well as the ruled”. Than the breakdown of the rule of law is caused by government making laws that are micro managing, so numerous we can’t possibly know them in advance, and not applying to the rulers, only to the ruled.

As more rules are passed, Government power grows. As this power increases, individuals outside of government, begin to see opportunities to lobby bureaucrats and politicians to achieve their goals.

It’s not just the PC crowd who want to use government to push an agenda. People from crony capitalists, to environmental crazies, are trying to use the power of government law making to force others to comply with their ideas.

What we are seeing is the correction for giving the government too much power. The best possible solutions for most of our problems, or perceived problems, are not found in one size fits all decisions by third party Government bureaucrats and politicians. The best possible solutions to problems are revealed when individuals voluntarily cooperate. We have traveled so far down this road that I fear the correction will have a high cost in strife between people. I hope I’m wrong.

Political Correctness Produces Petulant People

I think political correctness has been tolerated for decades by most people because they saw it as a petty annoyance.  But I think the tide is turning against it. There is always a degree of nonsense that an individual is willing to put up with because the cost of dealing with it isn’t worth the effort. But there is a limit, and each individual decides what his level of tolerance is. Once enough individuals decide they aren’t putting up with it anymore, look out. I think the unapologetic political incorrectness of Donald Trump has bolstered the confidence of many individuals to fight back. The GOP outsiders running for president have all taken shots at the gate keepers of political correctness, aka the main stream media. When individuals on the margin see enough people getting praised and not destroyed for fighting back, they will jump in the fray because the new cost of fighting isn’t as high as it was. When thinking about political correctness everyone should remember these two things 1) nobody has a right to not be offended and 2) another persons free speech stops at your ear. Or as my mother told me, sticks and stones may break my bones but names will never hurt me. When you shelter children from reality, you produce unrealistic children.

Here is an article titled, Yale University Students In Uproar Over Halloween Costumes. The student in the video is acting like a child. And we all know it is impossible to reason with a child. Children want their bottles NOW!

There is also a video of Bill Mahr talking about how political correctness is even ruining Halloween, which he says is the only day, out of 365 days a year, we are allowed to be politically incorrect.

Professor Gives Non PC Greeting To His Classes.

Criminology professor Mike Adams, of UNC Wilmington, takes dead aim at political correctness in this speech given to all his classes. This is music to my ears.

“Welcome back to class, students! I am Mike Adams your criminology professor here at UNC-Wilmington. Before we get started with the course I need to address an issue that is causing problems here at UNCW and in higher education all across the country. I am talking about the growing minority of students who believe they have a right to be free from being offended. If we don’t reverse this dangerous trend in our society there will soon be a majority of young people who will need to walk around in plastic bubble suits to protect them in the event that they come into contact with a dissenting viewpoint. That mentality is unworthy of an American. It’s hardly worthy of a Frenchman.”

“Let’s get something straight right now. You have no right to be unoffended. You have a right to be offended with regularity. It is the price you pay for living in a free society. If you don’t understand that you are confused and dangerously so. In part, I blame your high school teachers for failing to teach you basic civics before you got your diploma. Most of you went to the public high schools, which are a disaster. Don’t tell me that offended you. I went to a public high school.”

“Of course, your high school might not be the problem. It is entirely possible that the main reason why so many of you are confused about free speech is that piece of paper hanging on the wall right over there. Please turn your attention to that ridiculous document that is framed and hanging by the door. In fact, take a few minutes to read it before you leave class today. It is our campus speech code. It specifically says that there is a requirement that everyone must only engage in discourse that is “respectful.” That assertion is as ludicrous as it is illegal. I plan to have that thing ripped down from every classroom on campus before I retire.

“One of my grandfathers served in World War I. My step-grandfather served in World War II. My sixth great grandfather enlisted in the American Revolution when he was only thirteen. These great men did not fight so we could simply relinquish our rights to the enemy within our borders. That enemy is the Marxists who run our public universities. If you are a Marxist and I just offended you, well, that’s tough. I guess they don’t make communists like they used to.

“Unbelievably, a student once complained to the Department chairwoman that my mention of God and a Creator was a violation of Separation of Church and State. Let me be as clear as I possibly can: If any of you actually think that my decision to paraphrase the Declaration of Independence in the course syllabus is unconstitutional then you suffer from severe intellectual hernia.”

“Indeed, it takes hard work to become stupid enough to think the Declaration of Independence is unconstitutional. If you agree with the student who made that complaint then you are probably just an anti-religious zealot. Therefore, I am going to ask you to do exactly three things and do them in the exact order that I specify.”

“First, get out of my class. You can fill out the drop slip over at James Hall. Just tell them you don’t believe in true diversity and you want to be surrounded by people who agree with your twisted interpretation of the Constitution simply because they are the kind of people who will protect you from having your beliefs challenged or your feelings hurt.”

“Second, withdraw from the university. If you find that you are actually relieved because you will no longer be in a class where your beliefs might be challenged then you aren’t ready for college. Go get a job building houses so you can work with some illegal aliens who will help you gain a better appreciation of what this country has to offer.”

“Finally, if this doesn’t work then I would simply ask you to get the hell out of the country. The ever-growing thinned-skinned minority you have joined is simply ruining life in this once-great nation. Please move to some place like Cuba where you can enjoy the company of communists and get excellent health care. Just hop on a leaky boat and start paddling your way towards utopia. You will not be missed.”

Private Property vs. Collective Ownership: One Deals With Scarcity Better Than The Other

The first rule of economics is scarcity. There are not enough resources to satisfy peoples desires. Economic systems don’t create this scarcity, it is the natural state of our world. The two questions that economic systems have to answer are, 1) How can limited means satisfy unlimited wants? 2) Which economic system does a better job of dealing with scarcity?

Private ownership of the means of production is the definition of free market capitalism. State ownership of the means of production is the definition of socialism. The economic system that exists in the U.S. today is not free market capitalism. It is a system hampered by Government rules, regulations and taxes. These Government interventions take decisions about the means of production out of the hands of private owners and places them in the hands of bureaucrats.

No economic system that exists today is purely free market or centrally planned. Since change is constant, the direction an economic system is moving is what is important. So economic systems are either moving toward collective ownership or toward private ownership of the means of production. Or as F. A. Hayek said, “moving toward serfdom and poverty or freedom and plenty.”

 

PRIVATE PROPERTY DEALS WITH SCARCE RESOURCES

In this article titled, Why We Need Private Property To Deal With Scarce Resources, Patrick Barron does a great job explaining how private property deals with scarcity better than collective ownership. Here are some excerpts from the article.

The existence of scarcity is true of all resources (such as time, human energy, and natural resources). However, it is not necessarily intuitive that allowing scarce resources to be owned privately is the solution to this problem.

Consequently, socialism appears attractive to many and they turn to having all resources owned collectively for the “common good.” Unfortunately, a society which spurns private property…. often learns the terrible lessons of central planning and the tragedy of the commons (i.e., commonly held resources will be plundered to extinction)

Throughout history, most of mankind has been divided into a hierarchical system of masters and slaves with some gradations between the two extremes. The masters…. devised complex rules-based systems for resource distribution….. And ultimately, these plans depended upon pure terror for enforcement. But this so-called solution to the problem of scarcity — restricting the people’s liberty through the use of force — does not work.”

Problem 1: We Can’t Economize Without Effectively Ordering Our Preferences First

“.… Modern economics explained that without private ownership of resources, there was no mechanism for observing or acting on ordinal preferences in which persons prioritize desires from highest to lowest. Without a way to allocate goods according to ordinal preferences, there is no rational means to economize for the betterment of society.”

In other words, without markets and prices, there is no way to know what people really want or need, so the masters never really knew what to order the slaves to produce, what technical means to use, what alternative materials to use, the quality desired, or how much to produce. Thus, the commissars of the Soviet Union ordered the production of inefficiently produced, shoddy goods. The Soviet empire collapsed, despite the fact that Russia is blessed with vast natural resources and an industrious population.”

Problem 2: Few Raw Materials Are Ready To Consume

A second fatal problem with common/government ownership of resources is that few readily available, consumable resources actually exist. There are no resources on the planet that do not require at least a minimum of effort to transform into a consumable product……Of course, most natural resources require much more effort to convert to consumable products, passing through many stages of production.”

…. Consider a hiker lost in the wild. It matters not at all to him that great stands of timber lie within easy reach or that valuable minerals lie under foot. These natural resources require great effort over very long time periods to be converted into something consumable….. A lost hiker does not have the knowledge, time, or previously produced means to convert these basic resources into consumable products to ensure his survival. All this is far beyond anyone’s autarkic abilities.

Now let us assume that someone did harvest trees by felling them, transporting them to a lumber mill, milling them, storing them in a ventilated and dry place for many months before kiln-drying them….. advertising their availability to contractors, keeping sales records, sending out bills, and collecting the bills, only to have a socialist call him a plunderer and confiscate his lumber for free distribution to whomever the masters deemed to be politically advantageous to their continued privileged position. No one other than the favored cronies of government would ever harvest another tree….. production of usable lumber would be monopolized…. prices would increase and quality would decline. Moreover, with no voluntary market at work…. there would be no means of knowing if these resources were being used in a way valued by those who valued them most.”

Problem 3: We Need Private Property To Build Capital

Without the ability to profit from privately owned property, there would be no incentive to provide or withhold capital for any endeavor. Also, a system of private ownership is necessary to determine if that capital is being used in a way the consumers value. The consequences of ignoring this fact of economic science is most evident today in China’s ghost cities, where resources, both natural and human, have been expended for no observable benefit except to advance the careers of politicians….”

The opposite case of resource waste comes from special interest groups…use the state and prohibit exploitation of resources by private individuals…. modern environmentalists have convinced the political class that most progress is unsustainable, dangerous to our health, etc… Society is prevented from benefiting from their conversion to consumable products. The poor suffer the most from these policies as the prices of raw materials — and thus finished consumer goods — are driven up.”

“Private ownership insures that valuable resources will never be plundered to extinction, because their value will have been capitalized. Instead, private owners will seek to make resources as widely available as possible without endangering the long-term prospects for future harvesting of resources. The process of determining a resource’s capitalized value is impossible absent free-market capitalism with strict defenses of property rights.”

Despite both the theoretical and empirical evidence to the contrary, socialists tell us the opposite; i.e., that state ownership of all resources will prevent their plunder and ensure prosperity for all. As Ludwig von Mises explained, though, socialism is not an alternative economic system of production. It is a system of consumption only, and a system of economic ignorance and economic plunder.”

Ted Cruz Is Hated By The Establishment Of Both Parties

Ted Cruz has time and again pulled back the curtain allowing us to see how congress operates. Leaders of both parties hate him because he shows us the game of politics. The game is not about two parties competing to see who gets to sit in the seat of power. No, the real battle is between the leadership in both parties, on the one hand, and we the people on the other. It is between the rulers and the ruled. No matter which party is in the majority, government power expands, which means individual liberty shrinks. Neither party is interested in cutting the size and power of government.

We don’t even realize that we the people are the only ones who can take their power away. This is why the establishments of both parties have worked for decades to keep us ignorant about the reality of big government. Both parties have done a good job of convincing us that “solutions” to “problems” can only come from government, even though our present “problems” are consequences of previous government interventions, interventions which were proposed as solutions to previous problems that were caused by the original government solutions to our problems (did you follow all that). Government creates its own perpetual motion machine of solutions and problems.

The recent budget battle is an example of government caused problems that can only be cured by more government solutions.

Here is a video of Ted Cruz showing us what a farce the federal budget battle really is. This is why he is hated by the leadership of both parties.
